Many persons regret after a fit of uncontrollable anger: they smashed another’s car, kill another over a traffic rage, took revenge through murder. They find later they can no longer free themselves from a tight fix. The act led to graver consequences. Indeed, what you reap is what you sow.
I dedicate this piece to God as my own way of commemorating and reflecting for the Holy Week.
If there is any technique that may work to prevent your anger from exploding, or avoid getting cardiac arrest or stroke, just know by heart what I wrote down here. You may call this anger management. Read on.
Are you angry at another for he talked behind your back? Wear his shoes and see if he deserves your anger.
Are you mad at your son for the table milk that spilled on your pants? Think you are the son and feel if you deserve to be shouted at or punished.
Are you mad at the one who swindled you? Be the swindler and he is your victim then see if he must be killed.
Are you irritated at somebody borrowing from you for his child’s tuition? Be the one borrowing and see if you will lend some.
Are you exploding to the one who has just snatched your bag? Be the snatcher and think if you must be shot or not.
Are you raging because the tenant does not pay for the apartment? Be a tenant and think if his family must be driven out to the streets.
Are you so disgusted somebody fabricated stories that cost you job? Be the fabricator for promotion at the expense of another and see if you deserve the rage.
Are you angry at your employee for negligence costing a million peso? Be the employee and see if you need to be fired.
You explode your driver could not follow simple instructions. Have you thought if you can get a driver who is a lawyer?
You are mad at your domestic helper for she plugged a 110-volt refrigerator to a 220-volt outlet? Did you wonder if you can get a college graduate maid?
You are disgusted when your workers demand higher pay. Have you thought to be a worker and see if a wage increase is justified?
You are mad at Muslim rebels of Mindanao for they are insisting for independent state. Have you thought of being born a Muslim and feel if you deserve to be hated at.
You are not happy because you lost in a game, a political contest. Have you thought that without a loser there will be no winner and know that there is pride in fighting in your best?
Are you outraged over the beheading of the marines by the Abu Sayyaf? Be an Abu Sayyaf and know whether you should be beheaded, too.
Are you discriminating against dark or incapacitated or ugly people because they don’t look pleasing? Be dark or incapacitated or ugly and see if you deserve the treatment and see if to thank for a pretty face is just.
Are you laughing at bald men for they don’t look good as you want? Be a bald and see if you deserve those jeers and see if one who has full hairs really looks more handsome.
Are you mad because a man who looks ugly to you expresses his love to you? Be the ugly boy and see if the snub is just or to thank is better.
Are you disheartened because a dirty boy knocks on your car window asking for a peso? Be the boy and knock with him as the driver and know if you would give or not.
Are you mad because a reporter wrote stories that you think dishonored you? Be a reporter and determine if you deserve to be vanished from earth.
The examples are aplenty but the substance is the same. Why not give this as your best gift to God for the Holy Week by knowing this as your tradition?
