CABANATUAN, Nueva Ecija - President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday criticized Catholic priests anew, as he bristled at supposed criticism from them over the rising death toll in his administration's war on drugs.
Speaking at the 20th anniversary of the Premiere Medical Center here, Duterte once again presented a copy of his list of officials supposedly involved in the narcotics trade, while hitting out at the Church leadership in the country.
"Iyang mga bishops, inyo na iyan," he said, before expressing dismay over priests who tag casualties in the drug war as cases of extrajudicial killings.
"Hindi ko talaga maintindihan ang simbahan. Alam nila eh. Alam ng parish priest, gaano kalala. And yet they say extrajudicial killing... Kayo dito, alam naman ninyo iyan kapag ang taong bangag, lumalaban talaga iyan," he added.
Duterte had a cheeky suggestion for the Church to understand the depth of the drug problem in the Philippines.
"Kaya itong ibang pari, mag-shabu para maintindihan nila. I'll recommend one or two bishops. Sa kanila, walang shabu pero asawa meron," he said, while calling out the supposed hypocrisy of priests who take wives despite swearing to an oath of celibacy.
"Pareho man kami. Ako pati iyong mga pari sa Davao, pareho. Tig-dalawa, tatlo ang asawa. Ay sus. Huwag na tayong mag--with all the hypocrisy," he said. —JST, GMA News
