After Pres. Duterte won the presidency, death penalty is one of the things he wanted to restore because of heinous crimes happened in the country.House Justice committee approves death penalty bill, according to Congressman Umali the lower house will act on approving the bill regardless of its status in the Senate. He also said the lower House would keep busy fast tracking the passage of the proposed death penalty bill because it is priority legislation of President Rodrigo Duterte.
There are 20 heinous crimes that will impose death penalty including rape with homecide, kidnapping for ransom, and arson with death. Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez filed the bill in accordance to President Duterte's campaign promise of returning capital punishment against heinous criminals.
In a press briefing at the lower House, Rep. Umali who chairs the House justice committee said that they are eyeing the approval of the bill reimposing the death penalty by May or before the end of the first regular session.
The Conress would look into the cheapest way for the death penalty either by firing squad, lethal injection or by hanging.
