Who’s the real ‘gago’? Wha!

By ERWIN TULFO

PRIVATE prosecutor Vitaliano Aguirre, a good friend, was definitely wrong when he aped one of the Three Wise Monkeys during CJ Renato Corona’s impeachment trial.

When Aguirre covered his ears, he unwittingly sent the message to the listeners “to hear no evil.” Obviously, the wickedness he was referring to was that of Senator- Judge Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

But then, the whole fracas wouldn’t have happened if the prosecution had been treated with more decency and respect.

The entire prosecution team had been ridiculed, laughed at and harangued since Day One of the impeachment trial. Yet, they stood their ground and fought what probably is their biggest legal battle beyond their wildest dreams.

Day by day, the prosecutors had been drenched by biting criticisms and insults. Like rallyists being water-hosed by soldiers, they remained firm in prodding themselves to, “Fight, fight, fight!”

However, push came to shove and something snapped in Aguirre. He became one of the Three Mystic Apes. He simply decided to stop listening to the foul words describing him and his team. The word “gago” did it.

With all due respect, Senator-Judge Miriam, you may think the prosecution is disappointingly incompetent or is a shameful cast of fumbling fools, but I believe you still owe them a sense of respect.

Madam, the members of the prosecution team are not hardened criminals nor animals that you can berate to your heart’s content. They are your colleagues in the legal profession. On second thought, let me rephrase that. Even criminals and animals do not deserve to be blasted in public, like you do the prosecution team.

Aguirre is not a pock-marked boy in short pants na “pinabili lang ng suka,” madam. He has been a successful practicing lawyer for 40 years. He was one of those who handledthe defense of Hubert Webb in the Vizconde massacre case.

If I had been in the shoes of my good buddy Aguirre, I would have stood up and hurled invectives at the senator judges. You don’t use “gago” in a trial of national concern. It just is not used in a public gathering of respected luminaries. Simply because it strips a person of being human. It is demeaning.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But maybe, only a “gago” would hurl the word at educated, seasoned lawyers.

As for Aguirre, he was not among those who signed the impeachment complaint against Corona. In his own words, “Tinap lang nila ako.I didn’t sign it. Trabaho lang.”

Aguirre is right, the senator judges should be professional and not be too damned personal. Trabaho lang, walang personalan.

The senator judges have been having a heyday lynching the prosecution.

Senator Judge Pia Cayetano even blasted Aguirre on Twitter.

My god, ma’m, you already have the Senate as your floor. Why did you have to go cyber to blast Aguirre? Were you trying to impress that you are one cool dude and that you can also Tweet?

I am not defending Aguirre’s controversial chimpanzee act. As I earlier stated, it was not right. But I reiterate, he was pushed tothe limit. It was an act of self-defense. Verbal arrows were being hurled left and right at his team. Reflex probably made him shield himself from the attack.

Thumbs up for you, kid.

To all those who discern with me, please lend me your ears. I only have one word for you: Wha!
