Impeachment trivia

Dahli Aspillera

‘Pacquiao’s lawyers simply snubbed the BIR demand letters. “Kilala mo ba kung sino ako? Do you know who I am? I am the lawyer of Pacquiao! Ano ba itong BIR?’

JOAQUIN Bernas: "Is error in accomplishing the SALN, so commonly committed even by high-ranking officials, an impeachable offense? Let us hope that the Holy Season will help the impeachment committee arrive at a fair conclusion."

Bernas informs the Senator-Judges that most submit inaccurate SALNs. Bernas informs the Senator-Judges that they can use this Holy Season week to put wisdom in their consciences. Like… divine intervention will make the Senator-Judges act fairly and find Corona innocent of any misdeed?

Why do these romano priests always drag religiosity into everything? Utilizing the name of "The Holy Season" in vain to overlook lies and corruption? Bernas, who is Gloria Arroyo’s in-law, can show delicadeza by staying away from the Coronarroyo indictments. Bernas is saying that without the miracle of The Holy Season, the Senator-Judges can be unfair? Is being fair to Bernas finding Coronarroyo innocent of all accusations? And that his relative by affinity, Gloria Arroyo in particular, and Coronarroyo in general, get out of their legal offenses intact. Bernas is too obvious in his safeguarding of Coronarroyo.

Like a good romano priest, Bernas should just get on his knees and pray, which is what priests are supposed to do based on the Constitution’s Separation of Church and State.

Senator Miriam Santiago: "[The survey firm Pulse Asia] did not explain that during surveys, the Chief Justice’s results are low because his post is not political. That is the reason. In fact, he should not even be included there."

The witnesses at the impeachment trial made SC chief justice Renato Corona sound like the most political leader in the Philippines. Everything Corona did showed that politics is in every policy and affair in his day. Renato Corona’s rating in surveys are very low because people learned a lot of shocking revelations about him during the 31 days of televised trial. His negative ratings cannot be blamed on an apolitical position. How come President Aquino and Senator Juan Ponce Enrile who are politicians have very high ratings?

The problem of Manny Pacquiao with the BIR can be directly blamed on his lawyers. The lawyers received, but ignored the BIR demand for documents. The demand letter was delivered and received at the office of Pacquiao in GenSan on November 11. Majordomos must have opened the door and signed for the envelopes. Majordomos will pass on important mail to the lawyers.

Today, a lawyer tells media that the person(s) who signed the receipts for the demand letters are unknown in the Pacquiao household. Lie! Sekyus all over the mansion, four different times the door opened and receipt signed for, and the BIR is unknown in the household? The non-reply and defiance of Pacquiao reached the BIR commissioner on Nov. 22. The BIR case against Pacquiao commenced.

His lawyers’ alibi given to Pacquiao was "technicality." That the envelopes were delivered the wrong way. It should have been delivered "Personal Service" which means handed personally to Pacquiao. BIR has no idea where in the world Pacquiao was; it was delivered "Substituted Service" which means it was received by a responsible in-charge at Pacquiao’s heavily guarded official residence. The lawyers received the BIR letters, but they ignored it because it was delivered by "Substitute Service" instead of to be handed personally to Pacquiao.

Pacquiao’s lawyers simply ignored the BIR letters. "Kilala mo ba kung sino ako? Do you know who I am? I am the lawyer of Pacquiao! Ano ba itong BIR?" Didn’t these lawyers realize that ignoring the BIR demand letter could put Pacquiao in court and prison? Or is their hope being in defense, getting paid by the hour, for a case that will drag like the impeachment trial?

From Rafael Bermudez: Your column today (Bank Secrecy, Feb.26) should be sent to all members of the Senate who are trying the CJ. The only problem is that based on history, no one (rich and powerful) has been jailed for any wrongdoing. The people elected are most often rich or have been descendants from political dynasties that is why there is no way that the Philippines will ever be as progressive as its Asean neighbors. Look at Vietnam. More Australians are going there instead of the Philippines. The reason is that tourists feel safer and their laws are better implemented aside from very cheap fares and accommodations. Hopefully P-Noy will succeed in getting rid of the corrupt people in the government. Regards and more power to you. beltran5@tpg.com.au.
