Asia’s Banana Republic Rots as The Yellow Empire Strikes Back at Lady Alibaba

This now all boils down to the Senate. May they be guided by good sense, reason, fairness, and understanding of their constitutionally mandated roles. The Corona impeachment, whether we like it or not – will be the latest reality TV which will generate revenue for oligarch media – at the expense of the Filipinos of course.

Impeachments in the Philippines are but another form of entertainment – together with zarzuela, moro-moro, palabas, and probes in aid of legislation. It can certainly pass for entertainment to a shallow Filipino audience whose sense of right and wrong is determined on who best can pander to the primal urges of a tribe gone horribly wild – and run away with the loot while the audience is intoxicated in yellow cool aide. This is WOWOWEE/ YIPEE YAY YEAH or whatever moronic variety show name pinoys can come up with – on steroids.

On another note – what strikes me though is that while the FOIA has been taking an eternity to pass, or the obvious buttheaded-ness on removing the 60/40 constitutional provisions – Corona’s impeachment was achieved in record time – possibly one for the Guinness book of records.

The Philippine constitution allows more or less 83 days for the impeachment process to happen – the 15th Philippine Congress did it in less than a day – word is that it took only 5 working hours.

WHOA WHOA WHO – santa banana. There are only THREE ways to make my countrymen (or most human beings for that matter) – much less Filipino congressmen work that fast – and that involves: 1) a whole shitload of money; 2) blackmail or a gun pointed against one’s head; and 3) BOTH 1) and 2).

Now would be a good time to remember Aquino’s core principle that defined his Justice Reform Agenda – “From justice that money and connections can buy… to a truly impartial system of institutions that deliver equal justice to rich or poor.” – Man, Aquino’s pork barrel (read: taxpayers’ money redistributed by BIR to Aquino) sure bought 188 congressmen – lock, stock, and barrel.

For the most part, specially the Philippines – MONEY changes everything. Where there’s smoke there’s fire – one of those truisms that pop up in the Philippines like clock work. It doesn’t take rocket science to figure that out.

On the upside, it also provides a glimmer of hope that there are still decent Filipinos out there in Congress – and there are still Filipinos who vote for decent candidates.

People such as Navotas Congressman Tobias Tiongco who resigned from the House Majority coalition – and all his positions.

MANILA — A member of the House majority bloc has resigned after he said lawmakers who impeached Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona acted “with haste”.

“I resign from the majority and relinquish all positions assigned to me,” Navotas City Representative Tobias Tiangco said in his privilege speech Tuesday afternoon.

“How can you vote for the impeachment without having the chance to read the articles of impeachment much less verify the facts?…Why the haste in the matter of hours? Why cannot we give him due process?” he added.

Another rep who paid the price is Batangas Representative Hermilando Mandanas who was removed as chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means for reportedly refusing to sign the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Administration insiders will probably say that perhaps they need to throw more money at the reps who didn’t go with the flow. I suspend judgment and state that at times a man’s price is paid not in terms of money – but in terms of principles – and of values. In this instance, the gentlemen who refused to sign the railroaded articles of impeachment earned the right to be called “Honorable” .

For the rest of ‘em tongressmen – the 188 who signed the Articles of Incorporation without blinking an eyelash – it did not come as a surprise. With Aquino dangling the Pork Barrel – which he needs to be reminded is taxpayers money – and not his personal piggy bank. But oh well – baboy is baboy.

This turn of events reminds me of a basketball game. One where the coach asks for the referee to be replaced because the referees were making the right calls on poorly executed passes by Aquino’s team – it’s so Pinoy indeed.

In his refusal to see the incompetence of his lawyers – and his own incompetence (waddya expect), Mr Aquino is eroding the integrity of the Supreme Court, the Judiciary, the Philippine government – and Philippine society in general. Though it poses the question of whether – Filipinos in general – have integrity (as in not saying yes when you mean to say no – pakitang tao, plastic, ipokrito)?

Also, the seeming myriad contradictions that are in the constitution are a glaring evidence of a severely flawed charter – one that needs to be revised if the Philippines will have any chance of gaining developed nation status.

The series of steps that Aquino has taken – and will take some more (impeachment of 4 SC justices),leads the Philippines towards the path of despotism. Quite ironic that Cory Aquino is supposed to be the icon against dictatorship. But perhaps, this moment is exactly what’s needed so that Filipinos will realize that when they ditched Marcos for Aquino – they jumped from the frying pan and into the fire. Much like the Egyptians kicking out Hosni Mubarak and jumping into the Egyptian military dictatorship. From Marcos plutocracy – Filipinos jumped into the Filipino oligarchy and its attendant corporatocracy.

Meanwhile, as the Senate deliberates Corona’s impeachment for the next six months – the Freedom of Information Act remains in limbo, the economy remains protectionist – and Aquino’s pals in the Makati Business Club are making hay – Globe, PLDT, ABS-CBN, Meralco, Maynilad , BPI couldn’t be any better – while Filipinos are stuck to begging for free condom and being hanged in China, Singapore, or the Middle East . Which pretty much sums up the rot in this Asian Banana Republic.

Pearl of the Orient Seas? Bah Humbug. More like DUMPSTER of the Orient Seas.

I could only shudder, shirk. and smirk when the Washington Post reported that

The Philippine House of Representatives sent impeachment documents to the Senate on Tuesday accusing the Supreme Court chief justice of corruption and favoritism toward the country’s former president, now under hospital arrest for alleged election fraud.

Among other allegations, the impeachment complaint accuses the Corona-led court of ruling improperly in ex-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s favor when she sought to leave the country last month before she was arrested.

Mister Corona’s role is to uphold the rule of law – for all Filipino citizens – Hacienda Luisita and farmers alike; including Arroyo, and that of Mister Aquino – and not to satisfy a bloodlust for vindictiveness of a balding spoiled brat who hasn’t shown jack except make an utter fool of himself.

In retrospect – Emperor Aquino’s recent tirades against Corona during the recent National Criminal Justice Summit hosted by Aquino’s lapdog Darth De Lima may very well have been taken from Palpatine’s playbook.

Corona’s “fault” is that he upheld the rule of law – and not the rule of the mob. Sanity can be a crime in the land of the insane – called the Philippines.

Frankly, it’s not Corona who should be impeached, it should be Aquino – Congress is barking at the wrong tree. Unfortunately for Corona, he does not have the power of the pork barrel.

The powers that be have schooled everyone on Dictatorship 101. The nasty truth is that the Pinoy masses are not averse to a dictatorship or authoritarian rule. You just have to market it expertly.

Now, look back at the presidential race of 2010 and remember who suffered from being labeled “Future Dictator.” It was nothing more than baseless fear-mongering. If anything, Presidentiable Future Dictator’s fault is that he has poor marketing skills.

The Congressmen did not read the reasons for impeachment….Money was flashed infront of their noses…they took the money. Voted -Yes-for impeachment. And run away to deposit it in their bank accounts. The money is our taxpayers’ money…not, Noynoy Aquino’s money.
At least, we have free entertainment, to numb our rumbling stomachs; like Wowoowee Shows; brainless people on TV; Kris Aquino’s announcement to run for Senate; (I’m waiting for Boy Abundia’s announcement , also); Bogus Surveys; Nonsense Politicians; etc…while our economic problems multiply like locust…and most of the OFW slaves/Drug Mules, are coming back. Our Drug Mules are one at a time being executed by Lethal Injections, by the Chinese…
I have a good question: If Corona would had ruled in favor of Noynoy Aquino’s Hacienda Luisita. Would Corona be impeached? Or would there be any impeachment?

So essentially whatever the amount is that was dangled in front of those congressmen is the production cost of the new TV show Filipinos would flock to see. That’s a pretty expensive show, methinks, considering that there are no established stars and a ludicrous plot. :)

Blame that on NoyNoy’s lazy shenanigans, not on the SC, they should have filed charges within a month of assuming office. Which begs the question, shouldn’t laziness and procrastination be grounds for impeachment? If it is, then NoyNoy and his shenanigans wouldn’t have lasted half a year in office :)

Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven in the Philippines. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed.

They always thought, because they had power, they had wisdom. Many groups that have the power to make life decisions for others don’t ever have to live out the consequences. All too often arrogance accompanies strength, and we must never assume that justice is on the side of the strong. The use of power must always be accompanied by moral choice.

will increased credit rating attract more FDI? will it reduce the need to send Filipinos overseas because the constitution restricts investments from overseas

We revised the outlook to positive to reflect our assessment that the Philippines’ external vulnerability has diminished. We base our view on the current external liquidity and net debt indicators against the Philippines’ relatively high public external debt, about 48 percent of which is on commercial terms,” S&P credit analyst Agost Benard said in a statement. “We expect further rating improvements to be most likely driven by improvements in fiscal and debt credit metrics.”

External liquidity – The risk that a bank will experience funding problems as a result of factors outside of its direct control. The Federal Reserve defines three types of external liquidity risk. These are geographic (such as the premiums required on deposits at many Texas banks in the late 1980s), systemic (such as the adverse effects upon several large banks caused by the near failure of Continental Illinois Bank in 1984), or instrument-specific (such as the collapse of the perpetual floating-rate note market in 1986

external vulnerability has diminished – because of liquidity provided by OFW remittances – is that something to be proud of? you prostitute your countrymen to increase your credit rating – when you can open the economy – and have HIGHER ratings without prostituting Filipinos….

…external vulnerability has diminished – because of liquidity provided by OFW remittances – is that something to be proud of? you prostitute your countrymen to increase your credit rating – when you can open the economy – and have HIGHER ratings without prostituting Filipinos…. Exactly!…why I felt prompted to ask for their sources. It’s always good to ask the reasons behind these given ratings. We know certain *cough* admins *cough” or groups *cough* are notorious for taking credit for outcomes that turn out to be the result of factors or reasons that may not necessarily be a cause for pride or celebration.

I agree, this doesn’t eliminate the need to open up or liberalize our economy.

in addition, “This was the fifth upgrade the country received from credit rating agencies since the Aquino administration’s assumption into office on June 30 last year.” – after five upgrades in credit rating – this is what Aquino can show? decrease in GDP? decrease in FDI? more pagpag, and executed drug mules…

    balutpenoy Reply:

@felipe ….a credit upgrade does service to other countries’ perception of our fiscal health. But, can perception be realized when we restrict foreign investments? For all we know the only beneficiaries of a credit upgrade are other sovereign lenders, traders, and investment funds investing in bonds. These people do not create investments (and employment) in the country. Rather, interests and other fees siphon off taxpayer’s money (I’m excluding corporations as “we” are not stakeholders of those institutions, except of course, if you’re an investor), while part of the money raised from these instruments goes into the pockets of politicians and their minions. What can be more damning than that?
