Some 300 employees of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) tendered their resignation after the agency initiated a crackdown on corruption, Commissioner Caesar R. Dulay said Tuesday.
"We have about 300 resignations and retirements already. Maybe it's a subtle way of addressing the issue of graft," he said during a hearing by the House Committee on Ways and Means on the planned tax reform package.
The resignations were filed after Dulay instructed BIR officials involved in corruption to resign, the commissioner noted.
"During my first day [as commissioner], I mentioned that ... I suggested when I got in that – for the bad eggs – either resign if the hit is there, or take advantage of their optional retirement, or they just compulsory resign," he said.
The commissioner also noted some 400 internal administrative cases have yet to be resolved. "We are slowly addressing the issue," he said.
The BIR plans to "go on a massive recruitment program," and it has already requested to be exempted from the salary standardization law to so the bureau can off competitive hiring rates.
"We need people to do the collection and we cannot hire people – CPAs (certified public accountants), lawyers – if our hiring rates are not competitive to other agencies," he said. — VDS, GMA News
