Amando Tetangco’s swan song: Duterte waiting for DOJ case to jail ‘lazy, corrupt’ BSP, AMLC

President Rodrigo Duterte vowed to personally arrest the “lazy” and “corrupt” officials of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilpinas and Anti-Money Laundering Council, both led by the self-styled Philippines’ greatest central banker Amando Tetangco, once the Department of Justice has built a case against them possibly for obstruction of justice.
Duterte is furious that more than a month after berating publicly the BSP and AMLC, Tetangco and the rest of his management team have not yet delivered on vital bank records that would pin down the alleged flow of drug money of Sen. Leila de Lima and her cohorts involved in the illegal drug trade being operated inside the National Bilibid Prison.
“Sabi ko, ‘bantay kayo kay pag yan eh, t*** i** mo dadamputin ko kayong lahat. Kasi I could charge you for you know — bantay kayo, if I charge you for something at may naisip na ang Justice Department, I will personally arrest you, all of you,” said Duterte.
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II claimed that the BSP and AMLC have the duty to produce the bank records of de Lima and her cohorts because drug trafficking was a continuing crime.
The BSP and AMLC have been criticized for being “politicized” under Tetangco as confidential bank records have been produced easily against enemies of the Aquino administration and the Liberal Party, specifically in the impeachment trial of the late Chief Justice Renato Corona and the corruption probe against former Vice President Jejomar Binay while they have stonewalled the probe on de Lima, an LP member.
“You know, I’m going to charge all of you there, criminally. I’ll count one to three, and if you don’t resign, I will treat you as a drug addict,” said Duterte.
Duterte called the BSP and AMLC lazy despite being one of the highest paid government officials in the country.
“You know, you, you are—you are contributing to the corruption of this country. You have reported to the NBI and submitted it very late. Yet you do not have the assessment report. Kaya, kaya ko nilagay diyan mga—kaya ko kayo nilagay diyan kasi may trabaho kayo. What about our money? You are paid you to do your job. If you cannot do your job, get out from that office,” Duterte said.
He also thinks the BSP and AMLC were corrupt for falling prey to the bribes of the drug lords.
“But you know, you guys there are all corrupt, bantay kayo sa akin I will bring you down. Tetangco is about to retire, better prepare there ‘cause I’ll give you a whack. You are all, you are all corrupt and serving master. You are not supposed to engage in politics. Goddamnit,” said Duterte.
Tetangco, the highest paid government official and a multi-awarded central banker in the world, is the longest serving BSP Governor – he was first appointed in 2005 by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo; he was appointed to a second six year term‎ in 2011 by then President Noynoy Aquino. Tetangco has been the head of AMLC for more than a decade.
