There’s something seriously wrong with Filipinos who never progress in life even when abroad. Given the opportunities and benefits of being in another country, it is completely inexcusable for a Filipino to be stuck in whatever position in life he/she is in. There are obviously a lot of factors involved but the one factor that stands out the most, in my opinion, has something to do with the fact that some Filipinos are materialistic and superficial.
A taste of the American Life
Some Filipinos forget that just because they are in America doesn’t mean everything will be easy. Take for example this girl I know who, upon getting a job that pays only $10 an hour thinks she has become millionaire. I’m not eliminating the fact that even with that salary; you can still progress in life by saving up and going back to school. This Filipina only finished high school in the Philippines and that being said, it seems as if she doesn’t have any plans of continuing her education. She is not alone though. Her co-workers earn the same salary but they are working and studying at the same time as to not be stuck with that kind of job.
The difference between her and her co-workers is striking. While she has been in the United States for two years, her English is terrible and she can’t strike a good conversation with people. She pales in comparison with her co-workers who evidently know better than her.
Education is still important fool!
Instead of saving her money so she can go back to school, this Filipina spends her money on shit like UGG boots, fancy clothes, Juicy Couture bags, and whatnot. It’s definitely disturbing that her family lives in a crappy 2-bedroom apartment but it doesn’t seem to bother her one bit. The only thing she cares about is acquiring all these expensive things never mind the fact that these are basically useless and only makes her look like a total bimbo.
Her income doesn’t hinder her from going back to school. A subject in a community college will only cost her $78 and she could finish an Associate’s degree in just 2 years if she wasn’t so lazy and materialistic. Instead of buying $130 pair of boots, she should aspire to have a better life and regard education as important.
The same thing goes for her brother who works as a baker earning $9.50 an hour who has an Iphone and is planning on buying a Macbook Pro. It’s downright hilarious that he wants all these gadgets but won’t be able to use them up to their full potential because… he’s just a god damn baker. I highly doubt that a Macbook can be connected to an oven so that it can make pan de sal.
Sociology says that poor people who suddenly acquire more than what they used to have would most likely purchase things that would make them appear well-off. This Filipina is not alone. Most Filipinos abroad do the same due to the fact that they are now experiencing better lives compared to when they were still in the Philippines. To conclude, the main reason why they act the way they do is because they have low standards for themselves. They compare their lives in the United States with the lives they had in the Philippines and that doesn’t make sense. If they would only realize that that is like comparing apples to oranges, they wouldn’t be caught up in the kind of lives they have.
It’s not the recession that’s preventing Filipinos from being rich or at least middle class in the United States. It’s their materialism and superficiality that’s getting in the way of succeeding and when I say succeeding, it doesn’t mean just having fancy stuff. You may have fancy things but they are useless if your brain is empty and you don’t have a decent home.
