Dr. Alcala receives commendations after saving children’s lives from Dengvaxia

Municipal doctor named Clemente Alcala of Candelaria, Quezon, is now being commended for standing his ground and trusting his instinct for refusing to vaccinate children with Dengvaxia no matter what sanctions he would face.

According to Alcala, he argued with the Department of Health (DoH) directive and refused to administer the inoculation of Dengvaxia vaccine to students in elementary school because of his doubt on the said postive benefits once given to recipients after the DoH and Sanofi failed to answer the question he raised.

Among municipal doctors from Region 3 (Cental Luzon), Region 4-A (Calabarzon), Region 7 (Central Visayas) and National Capital Region (Metro Manila) convened by the regional and provincial health offices and Sanofi Industries to introduce the vaccine, Alcala said he was the only one who raised questions, which DoH personnel or Sanofi failed to answer.

Alcala is the only doctor who asked for the Dengvaxia’s effect if given to a person who has not infected by Dengue and also to a person who has already contracted the dreaded disease.

Alcala pointed out that since dengue is a virus, it tends to inflict more damage on a person already vaccinated with an antibody because the antibodies will attack the blood vessels, not the virus, wherein, Dengue’s primary complication, according to him, is massive bleeding of the blood vessels.

Aside from that, he also questioned the data presented during a dengue summit he attended, before the Dengvaxia Immunization Program was implemented, which did not reflect the result on random vaccination to the target output.

“They should have isolated, for example, a hundred respondents vaccinated with Dengvaxia Stain 1, then put them in a place where they were bitten by mosquitoes with dengue virus. If they showed symptoms of dengue, only then can they be counted as concrete logistics,” Alcala explained.

“I’m willing to face any sanction from DoH higher ups than risk the lives of more than 4,000 elementary school students of Candelaria,” he added.

Alcala was relieved at the same felt sad after the news about children died because of Dengvaxia was reported.

Parents of elementary school students in Candelaria town gave their million thanks to Alcala for saving the lives of their children.
