You win some and you lose some. Manny predicted a decisive fight. Indeed it was a decisive fight – and it was won by Marquez with a KO by the 6th round.
This decisive win by Marquez puts “Pinoy Pride” where it belongs – to the canvas. With this win, Pacquiao’s supporters can’t claim Manny was cheated and what not.
The 3rd round that saw Manny drop to the floor wasn’t the writing on the wall – it was way before that.
It started when Manny became a congressman. There’s a difference when a fighter is hungry – and when a fighter is no longer hungry. When a fighter is no longer hungry, complacency creeps in – and the passion that comes with proving one’s self is whittled down with the vanity of victory – and the lifestyle that comes with being wealthy.
It’s not clear whether Manny will learn that in the quest for excellence one can’t serve many masters. We don’t know what Marquez has been up to while Manny was fraternizing with his colleagues in Congress – by the looks of it Marquez wasn’t running for congressman but focusing on boxing.
Yes, it appeared that Manny was on the lead – but appearances can be deceiving. At times we only see the physical aspect of the game and forget the mental aspect of the game. It is not only physical stamina that counts – but mental stamina as well. And speaking of luck – a quip from Louis Pasteur comes to mind – “Chance favors the prepared mind.“
With the “pambansang kamao” knocked down to the mat – now is a really good time to drive the point home to the “pinoy pride” mob – are Pinoys focused on the things that matter – or on the trivial and the irrelevant?
As Noynoy takes pride on the 7.1% GDP growth, Filipinos are knocked down with stagnant unemployment – virtually 7% since he took office in 2010, underemployment has increased, the Philippines remains among the world’s most corrupt countries – and the Congress answer to that is to provide contraceptives dole-outs, increase the pork barrel, increase subsidies and protection to cronies.
The Belmonte-Enrile initiative to amend the charter and remove the economic restrictions in the constitution has been placed in the back burner. Meanwhile our ASEAN neighbors are reaping the benefits of foreign direct investments – low unemployment, high GDP per capita, and more equitable distribution of wealth.
One thing Pinoys can learn from Marquez win is that focusing on the right things – and being persistent delivers positive outcomes – it is a lesson that continuously evades the Philippines and Pinoys.
