How embarrassing! Dilaws accuse Duterte of credit grabbing and get burned

Duterte: We don’t claim credit for gov’t projects

MANILA, Philippines — The administration could not claim credit for government projects as these are financed by taxpayers’ money, President Duterte said Thursday.

“Just because we mentioned it in passing sometimes, it’s not because we are claiming any credit,” Duterte said during the groundbreaking and inauguration of the North Luzon Expressway to South Luzon Expressway connector road and the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 projects in Caloocan City.

“We are not into claim and credit syndrome,” Duterte said. “Nobody can claim credit in the name of the people. It is their money and for all of us. Just a reminder.”

While he thanked contractors and government partners, Duterte stressed that the projects should be credited to taxpayers.

“All of the projects that we undertake and we’ll do for the rest of the term, we give our gratitude to builders, contractors, the partners of government and we place it in the name of the people of Republic of the Philippines,” he added.

Duterte lauded the public works and transportation departments and NLEX Corp. for the implementation of the harbor link project.

“This will definitely improve access and mobility in the area and result in greater socioeconomic gains for our industries and communities. I am hopeful that the remaining portion of the NLEX Harbor Link project will be completed within the next two years,” he added.

The President joked that the connector road would not only reduce travel time but also lead motorists to “heaven.”

He urged the private sector to continue working with the government to enable the country to have a “stronger and more progressive future.”

The President’s speech lasted for eight minutes, way shorter than his extemporaneous and freewheeling speeches that usually last an hour.

In the middle of his speech, Duterte joked that he was getting dizzy because he was no longer familiar with the areas in Metro Manila.

“This will extend NLEX southward (from) the end of the Harbor Link Segment 10... nahihilo na ako nito (I am getting dizzy) p****- segment... I’m trying to figure out where I am. I said I have forgotten the physical arrangement of the greater Manila area,” the President said.

Subway

Meanwhile, senators said yesterday the construction of the country’s first subway and other key mass transit projects under the government’s centerpiece Build, Build, Build program should help restore public confidence in the local rail transit system, which has been under fire due to its poor and unreliable service.

“The Metro Manila Subway, along with the MRT-7, offers hope to railway commuters who have been putting up with long lines, passenger congestion, defective coaches and generally poor maintenance in existing railway lines, particularly the MRT-3,” Sen. Sonny Angara said.

Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito, vice chairman of the public services committee and an advocate of the expansion of the rail system, cited President Duterte and the Department of Transportation for pushing railway projects, particularly the PNR-North, PNR-South, Mindanao railways system and the Metro Manila Subway System.

Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III said the groundbreaking of the project was proof the Duterte administration was “about action, not words.”

“For years there has been talk about building more train systems in Metro Manila to provide its residents with a fast and efficient way to get around the metropolis, as we know that many residents spend two, sometimes three, hours in traffic just to get to work. Pero walang nangyayari (but nothing happened),” Pimentel said. – With Edith Regalado, Paolo Romero
