3 Manila Catholic Schools to “Discipline” Students Who Refuse to Join Rally

Three schools in Metro Manila operated by the Catholic Church, warn that students who refuse to join the September 21 anti-Marcos Martial Law rally, will face academic consequences, and other types of disciplines.
Sr. Matilde Cruz, spokesperson of St. Scholastica’s College, said that the school has issued mandatory attendance at Luneta Park at 4PM, and students who fail to sign the  attendance sheet will be suspended for 1 week, and will be given special Martial Law orientation.
De La Salle University board member Fr. Crispin Caponpon, said that students who will not join the rally will suffer receive failing grades on Theology.
Meanwhile, the College of Saint Benilde said that non-attendance to the mandatory rally is a violation of school law and violators will be reprimanded. The school did not specify the penalty.
Several rights groups who are aware of the controversial decision castigated the schools administrators for violating the student rights.
Prof. Segismundo Salvacion of UP human Rights Law, said that these schools can be sued for violation of students rights.
The first to announce such unorthodox decision was St. Scolastica’s on Monday, and despite receiving criticisms from parents, the school did not change its decision.
A certain Atty. Margie Baculi, whose daughter is attending the school, said she will encourage her daughter to transfer to another non-sectarian school on the next semester. The lawyer also urged the public not to send their children to the said “tyrant” school. /Nikki Maliksi/
