Hay.

Marami ding abusado, porke may demokrasya, inaabuso.

This is exactly what the article talks about. Sorry to ruin your parade but it is exactly people like you who is the target of this article. The problem lies with us, we vote trapos and corrupt officials in power, and when we do get trapo service and corruption in government, you people complain. Is it any wonder why this country is in such a ****hole right now?

C’mon guys and gals, you know better than that. Unlike in other countries, YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE PLATFORMS AND POLICIES of your candidates that you vote, you just vote just for the sake of it. Sometimes, I even think democracy isn’t suited for Filipinos, as seeing the majority of them are dumb and all.

Ann, unfortunately, mukhang totoo nga ang sinasabi nila. I’d like to take your side on it, pero it’s true. Filipinos are too hedonistic and mahilig sa party, rather than working hard.

Kaya taking the easy-way-out is the common thing to do. Tama yung general idea ng article, whether we like it or not. But when the country becomes richer, it automatically lessens corruption.

Even the fact that our women are becoming whores and entertainers abroad is a form of corruption. But if all Pinoys united sana to fight for a better economy, gaganda ang mga job prospects natin lahat.

Those are corruption. And those are caused by economic need.

The article of rafterman simply says na kung tinanggal mo ang economic need dahil gumanda ang ekonomiya, maglelessen ang corruption. And in my opinion, maglelessen din ang moral corruption: girls becoming bargirls, wowowee dancers, gogo-dancers, prostitutes, etc.

People are not corrupt for the sake of being corrupt. People are forced by economic need to become corrupt in order to meet their basic needs. Create a society with abundance, mawawala ang corruption.

I agree with your phrase: “People are not corrupt for the sake of being corrupt. People are forced by economic need to become corrupt in order to meet their basic needs. Create a society with abundance, mawawala ang corruption.”

Party must be set aside too. My team has been aiming to help people live in adequacy. Yet after wasting time of lectures and trainings, none of them really wants to invest time to do what we had taught them.

Yeah! I admit I’m one of those people stated in this article. It’s sad but true. The big question here is, after knowing this fact what are you going to do about it…? Are you going to sulk and cry? Because I surely intended to do something about it.

A small act of kindness towards another person would surely make a big difference. Take Efren Penaflorida for example… He started with his push cart and now his pushing the world by his example…

The solution is just to do the opposite of what rafterman said.

    1. Think first before you act (don’t be stupid)
    2. Do not party too much
    3. Work hard (now that you have enough time and energy stored because you lessened the hedonism)

E paano nga kasi, for a long time, di kasi nakatutok ang mga Pilipino sa economy. Puro salita ang hinihingi from government.

Effect lang ng lack of development ang corruption, it’s not the cause of lack of development.

Why the hell are you trying to justify the ****ty things that our countrymen do?

And while you’re at it, get a brain transplant.

Sige, point it out to us. Where the hell are the words in the article that implicate na ‘nilalahat’ nga ng author???

There’s a BIG difference between pointing things out and talking ****. You can’t fault someone for pointing things out, but talking **** is baseless and classless. Which your comments sound like, by the way.

The people who have read this article and have taken everything personally are all people who miss the point. And will continue to miss the point even if we spell it out in red letters or use flashing billboards.

See how you and your sibblings found a way to escape the misery in the Philippines? You are very resourceful kung baga.

It’s like there is a different standard when you’re in the Philippines.

They cannot create a job market oby inviting foreign investors in the country dahil palpak ang mga patakaran!

Mr GabbyD, I’ve described some of Da Pinoy’s penchant for partying and fiesta — and even describe our so-called “revolutions” as “ocho-ocho fiestas” and our elections as “fiesta elections”.

If you are not satistfied with this, no less than that greatest Pinoy hero of the blogosphere — Jim Paredes — describes the Pinoy archetype as such:

Don’t we tend to excuse our foibles and say that we are still a young country to explain why we are in the mess we are in? From all indications, we seem to be ruled by the ‘child’ archetype who refuses to look at things in an adult manner. Consider the following:

    - We love to party—fiestas, salo-salo, barkada, ‘gimmick’, the longest Christmas holidays in the world, etc. We have A LOT of holidays in this country.

    - We have very short memories. We are not great fans of history and we never seem to learn from it. We elect the same mistakes over and over again.

    - We have an even shorter attention span. We do not hear of our government looking 20 years ahead. Even when other nations plan for the next 50 to 100 years, we don’t seem to go beyond the ‘5-year plan’. We like things ad hoc. Bahala na si Batman.

    - We go merrily along seemingly unconcerned about our serious problems. In every survey the past few years, we always see ourselves as ‘the happiest people in Asia’ despite the hole we are sinking in.

    - Our favorite religious icon is the Santo Nino — the depiction of Jesus as a child. We like a lovable, cute God—a representation not unlike ‘Hello Kitty’ or Barbie that we like to dress up. Our God of choice is a combination of a cute child star (with curly locks and white skin) and the Promil baby — intelligent and, at a young age, could preach at the temple.

    - We love entertainment, Little Miss Philippines, telenovelas about young love, fantaseryes, etc. that are mostly about the young.

If all of the above are true, what kind of child is the Filipino? Is it the archetypal force that characterizes us as ‘the golden child’, the ‘meek and quiet child’ or the ‘spoiled brat’? Are there other archetypes to choose from?

Evidence of this character of ours abounds! :D

We love entertainment, Little Miss Philippines, telenovelas about young love, fantaseryes, etc. that are mostly about the young.

With all this entertainment, it’s no wonder our idle time overlaps our work time. A neighbor of mine who owns a sari-sari store once tried to set me up with her son and bragged about how hardworking he was but I saw for myself how lazy the idiot could get. Every time I’d be rushing off to work and would pass by the store, he would call out and tell me to stop for a bit and have a drink. When I asked what the occasion was, he always said “Wala lang.” No reason. So much for trying to impress me.

We have very short memories. We are not great fans of history and we never seem to learn from it.

Case in point: Ondoy. How many more typhoons do we have to endure before we get it into our thick skulls that preparing for typhoon season should be SECOND NATURE to us? That and we know that garbage and illegal logging causes floods, but what did we do when the waters receded? Didn’t we litter again? I wonder how many more people have to die before they get the point.

Giving Jim Paredes credit for that one, though I tend to disagree with his other views. :P

Filipinos are “partying all the time” is a way of saying na puro aliw at libangan lang ang inaatupag ng mga Pilipino. Doesn’t mean all Pinoys go to Embassy or Ascend or have birthday parties in their house all the time.

It just means puro “fun” ang nasa isip ng mga Pinoy.

So kung ikaw nagtatanong ka “so where are the parties? saan?” now you know na MARAMING IBANG KLASENG PARTY.

Did you ever wonder why there’s correlation between the Philippines’ lack of progress and the fact that foreigners notice that Filipinos are always smiling?

The Singapore Strait Times, in an editorial published entitled “This is sport?,”
It shows how pathetic party loving Filipinos brought shame to themselves by proposing to make Dancesport a sport in the SEA Games….

“Nobody can be certain any more whether the Southeast Asian games showcase sport, as the word is understood, or indigenous diversions. This is no facetious poser.

“The Games are at risk of becoming a nonentity if the respective national Olympic committees do not draw a line between athleticism and cultural eclecticism. The most recent host, Vietnam, introduced native pastimes as quaint as shuttle**** kicking. The Philippines, next year’s host, has committed a worse heresy by dropping soccer and badminton from the provisional list. Can one conceive of Hamlet without the prince? That the Filipinos have no tradition in those sports hardly excuses them the axing. To round off the logic they might as well insert pineapple-fiber weaving as a medal event. Arnis, a local martial art, is in. So also a mutation called dance sport, which is just lovely for a party-loving people.

“But also missing are a number of other conventional sports: volleyball, table tennis, weightlifting, cycling, and sailing among them. Unless reinstated in the final list, the Manila Games will be a mongrel cottage exposition. South-east Asian people have a great deal of respect for each other’s cultures and traditional art forms. As well, the Filipinos are essentially following a trend set by previous hosts, who had included minority disciplines they were good at. The unwritten code of permitting the host full liberty to design the programme has to be broken now if the SEA Games are to honour youthful athleticism. A Malaysian official who feels likewise also made the point that it is not South-east Asian’s habit to offend the hosts. This is a virtue and the region’s great cultural impediment as well. The Asean political grouping has suffered for it. But with fun and games, one can get away with a measure of firmmess. Sorry, Manila, you should yield.”

C- start their own microbusiness in cooperation with a cooperative

D- go to provinces where their skill get a premium rate

I hope it’s nice in that bubble of delusion you live in because once that’s popped, you’ll be surprised at how many Pinoys prefer having a good time first before working hard and then when the partying stops and they realize that they’ve got ****loads of work to do, they go at it fast enough but the end results are always half-hearted. The house I lived in is an example of that. Sloppy carpenter work, faulty plumbing. You can take a good guess as to what the people working on the house loved to do and when the deadline of the house loomed over them, they worked quickly to finish it and they covered up their mistakes pretty well. If you want to insist that it doesn’t happen, that’s fine. You can keep your thumb stuck in your mouth and never grow up.

The truth of the matter is that a MAJORITY of Pinoys are more pleasure-seeking and fatalistic. Well, being masaya alone doesn’t put food on the table. However you act, God will provide the rest. If you can’t work hard and you prefer to just have fun, then God will provide temporary happiness and fair-weather friends for you but that’s about all that you get. Come morning after you’re nursing your hangover, you’ve got empty pockets and your friends are gone.

My parents are both “workaholics” but if we define that as “people who work hard to provide for their family” then they’re guilty of doing it. But it’s precisely because they work hard that they have the means to give their kids a few “luho” every now and then. My mom always has enough set aside to drag me out to accompany her to shop on the weekends and that’s her idea of fun. My dad sets enough aside to treat the family out to a good movie and a meal on weekends. That’s also his idea of fun. But they don’t trade work over it. When it’s time to work, hindi mo sila pwedeng kulitin, hindi ka pwedeng makipagkwentuhan sa kanila. Kasi nasasayang ang oras and there is a lot of work that can be done in the time it takes to gossip.

At nakakainsulto ang sinasabi mo. I guess this means that the one hour drinking session I usually had with co-workers AFTER WORK doesn’t count as having fun, does it? That makes me sober and boring? I have news for you: I CHOOSE TO BE SOBER. But boring? LOL. If I didn’t like my life and didn’t crack jokes about it – whether regarding work or everything else – I should have committed ritual suicide a long time ago because I felt life was too “boring”. Get your facts straight before you make all these assumptions about people.

Broad generalization my ass, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to detect the sarcasm in your comments because you obviously don’t like the bad things about Filipino culture pointed out. You prefer to sweep them under the rug. You want to pretend that the majority of Pinoys are hard-working and that what’s being written in this article is a load of bullcrap. Well, sorry, but being as Filipino in nationality (AND ALSO THE FACT THAT I WAS BORN IN THE PHILIPPINES AND LIVED THERE FOR 24 YEARS OF MY LIFE) as you like to think you are, I didn’t look at everything around me through rose-colored glasses. Which is pretty much the impression you’re giving off here with the tone of your replies.

I grew up in neighborhoods that were full of tambays. They always had to have an excuse for a party and then later on, there would be explosive fights over the money that they used up. And these people also borrowed money from my folks which would have been fine if they’d used it for something important or if they’d break out of their vicious cycles and get proper jobs and save money, but it was the same goddamned thing day in and day out. You think that isn’t frustrating to look at? Able bodies wasting themselves away because they prefer to think of life as short and that they should have as much fun as possible. Without even thinking that there are people who depend on them and they could actually do much more.

Perhaps you didn’t grow up in these areas, so you wouldn’t know what it’s like. I imagine you grew up in sheltered villages where everybody probably drove a Benz. If you have nothing substantial to contribute to the discussion here, for the sake of your miniscule brain, give it a rest and just shut up and go away. Come back when you have something smarter for me to pick at.

Bawal ang katangahan you ****ing DODO!

    Gabby ****ing putangina DODO.

Maia hit the nail right on the head because she lived in such an environment.

One of those insulated ****-head oligarchs that know nothing about the real Philippines. Or siguro wala ka Pinas, pero tagalog kayo magsalita ng parents niyo that’s why you speak Tagalog. But seems that you are totally OUT OF TOUCH with the Philippine condition. You know NOTHING about real Filipinos. Where did you grow up, ha, GabbyDodo?!? In a Pinoy enclave in Daly City?

Kasi as far as I know, you really are out of touch with the Philippines and with Filipinos. You have no real desire to help make the Philippines a better place. Para sa yo, any criticism is EVIL, and you don’t want to hear any criticism, ESPECIALLY CRITICISM ABOUT FILIPINOS THAT IS TRUE.

Balat-sibuyas ka, you dick-sucking fag! You know nothing about Filipinos, you know nothing about the Philippines! Putangina, baka nag di ka Filipino eh, baka you’re a spy from North Korea na natutong mag-Tagalog and you want Filipinos to FAIL by making Filipinos IGNORE their shortcomings and weakpoints para patuloy ang mga mali nating mga Pinoy. You are a ****ing idiot!!! Because you want Filipinos to be WEAK instead of STRONG and weakness-free!!!

You pretend to defend Filipinos, but actually you want us to continue to be weak!!! You are like an army doctor paid by the enemy to make diseased soldiers continue to be in the same area with their other comrades at arms so that they get infected and all get weak. An army doctor is supposed to diagnose properly, GIVE THE RIGHT MEDICINE and tell the sick party to stay away from the others while recuperating, so as not to infect the others. But YOU, you ****ing idiot GABBYDodo, are the traitor army doctor that is paid by the enemy to give sick soldiers with TB and dysentery a “clean bill of health” and let them stay in the barracks with their comrades, thereby making them all get sick, and some even die!!!

That’s a sneaky way to wage war, you traitor!!! You want Filipinos to be WEAK that’s why you want FILIPINOS to continue to have weaknesses that keep us from progressing!!! **** YOU you goddamned mother****ing piece of ****!!!

    Puta ang ina mo GabbyDodo!!

GabbyD, You make broad generalizations about a SAMPLE GROUP, not about individuals, CRAP-****!

If 7 or 8 out of 10 Filipinos do a particular thing then it can generalized that Filipinos GENERALLY do that thing.

But if you make a comment about Maia or any single person, unless you have incontrovertible proof that the person is what you say he or she is, then what you say is not a generalization or broad generalization: it’s a FALSEHOOD.

Making generalizations makes sense when the phenomenon observed happens more than 50% of the time within the sample group. What’s your problem with Rafterman telling the truth anyway?

IT IS TRUE that Filipinos like to party. It is true that Filipinos are fun-loving people (too fun-loving most of the time, in fact), and it IS TRUE that far too many Filipinos have financial difficulties AS A RESULT OF NOT HAVING FOCUS ON WORK and instead having more focus on fun.

What’s your problem with the FACTS, you idiot?

That’s why you’re such a stinking cretin, you know?

**** you and **** all the ****ing losers who think like you!!

I really agree with this one, pero ang kinakati lang ng isip ko ay…

Now that we have pinpointed the three main reasons why the Philippines, as a collective individual (di ko rin to nagets kung ano) is in the mess it is in right now, WHERE WILL WE GO FROM HERE?

Majority of the “everyday party, ignorant and lazy” Filipinos wouldn’t be able to read this one. What steps should be made to reverse this disease that’s already embedded on the culture of Filipinos since the Spanish occupation?

In fairness to the administration, way back in 2001 noong inauguration ni GMA sa EDSA Shrine, sabi niya “We need to work on our work ethic”, short of saying “hoy, masyado tayong tamad, we need to work harder!”

Here’s a good way to test if your a traditional pinoy (bobo, tamad, mahilig sa gimik, mabisyo)

Check where you spent your 13th month pay.

    - did it go to pay bills for previous “non essential” expenses?
    - did you use it to go on a spur of the moment gimik?
    - did you use it to buy the latest lifestyle gadget? ( buying unreasonably priced brand items for the sake of prestige)
    - spent money to impress your circle of friends, something normally out of your means to pay for?
    - net of your essential monthly bills (food, utilities) is the total of your non-essential expenses higher than your savings rate?
    - do you even have savings?

… I think you know where these questions are going to.

I’m not saying that we should stop celebrating events, WE need to celebrate our victories and milestones, but the 15th and 30th day of the month is not a milestone. If your drinking / partying every time you get your salary, then your partying too much.

By the way I don’t consider public gath

And pinoys complain: “mahirap ang buhay!” Hirap sa atin kasi, kahit wala gawa, kahit hubo’t- hubad at nakatunganga, maka-survive pa rin. Tignan ko lang kung makasurvive ng nakahubad for 1 hr sa winter(or kahit autumn or spring)! have to work, have to move! kasi kung hindi, manigas ka sa lamig!

PARTY what’s wrong with partying? Liberal party, Democratic party, Party all-night party all-day?

Partying is a healthy sign of a human being.

NOT GOING to parties like these BUNCH OF LOSERS HERE LONELY ANTI-PINOYS HERE ON THESE BLOGS STUCK ALONE AT HOME OR AT WORK WITH THEIR COMPUTERS BECAUSE NO ONE INVITES THEM TO PARTIES

    NOW THAT’S THE PROBLEM!!

KASI WHEN THEY CANNOT CARRY A HAPPY AND INTERESTING CONVERSATION everything coming out of their mouths will make you depressed about your life so better stay away from them who would invite you to a party if you’re like that, huh? Loser!

Filipinos are generally a happy people, hindi mo maalis sa atin yan, we were compared once to the Hobbits from the Lord of The Rings, we are all lucky to be happy, we are happy with our lives so we love to celebrate LIFE

The world admires us we have gone through so much calamities especially this year but we never lose hope, the US soldiers who helped us uncover the dead bodies in the muds were all depressed but we still managed to smile at them for helping us

Do you know how many people in Japan and the US commit suicide because of depression???

Look at the list below and compare

We are almost at the bottom of the list because it shows we have a healthy mental being

Wala dun sila ngayon nade-depress nawawalan meaning ang life nila so better to die for them than live a meaningless life. So their answer is Suicide.

Either divorced sya or unhappy with their spouse, or single so walang meaning ang life nya para sa kaniya

Do you think Bill Gates or Warren Bufftett are happier than the regular Filipino? Do you think Tiger Woods is happy with all the money and success and recognition worldwide? No way, hayun nahuli nangangaliwa pala kasi HINDI SYA HAPPY!

Happiness is not about having a lot, it’s about being happy with what you have

It’s about giving to others and serving one another, kasi may Diyos sa taas nanonood sa atin

These are our beliefs kasi eh:

It is easier for a camel to enter into the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven

Kasi we believe BLESSED ARE THE POOR for they shall inherit the earth.

So it comes down to beliefs

The Japanese, they believe when they die it’s over! So whatever failure they have either in business or personal life hayun nag hahara-kiri na, binubutas sariling tyan, nagka-kamikaze, nangdadamay pa ng kapwa para lang mapansin or makapatay ng iba, or tumatalon sa harap ng tren para tapusin na kasi alam nya TAPOS NA pag patay na sya

Tayong Pinoy hindi, alam natin this life is just a stage, a test kung we will follow God’s word or not

Basta tayo gumawa tayo ng mabuti, masaya pamilya natin, naglilingkod tayo sa kapwa at DI NANINIRA SA KAPWA PILIPINO ok na tayo

But it doesn’t mean tamad tayong lahat na Pinoy, hindi.

    STOP GENERALIZING PLEASE ANTI-PINOYS

Look at the list below SUICIDE RATES worldwide

Sana for you New Year’s resolution, mapasama kayong lahat dyan na mag suicide na para mawala ang mga SALOT na tulad niyo mabawas-bawasan ang mga TRAITORS NA ANTI-PINOY

Huh?! I don’t think you know what you are talking about. I for one have to say no to some of the invites coming my way because I have a very busy schedule and I know my priorities. I can’t go partying all the time because I have to think about tomorrow and the consequences of my actions. Be careful with your assumptions. Your assertions don’t have any basis. Your comments are very, very defensive. It makes you look desperate.

Are you saying that Filipinos want to stay the way they are because they are happy anyway?

Why are you angry? If you had a loved one who is going down the wrong path, wouldn’t you try and help him/her? You are the Anti-pinoy. Because the Pinoy I want to know is someone who is responsible and sensible, not someone who is in denial. You are incapable of understanding any new concept outside of your comfort zone. Just stop and think for a moment if any of the things being said is true. Filipinos do love fiestas and showing off even if they are already broke and even if it kills them so they don’t really need to commit suicide.

See how defensive you are too because I said ALL THESE ANTI-PINOYS BLOGGERS are all bunch of losers

So there you go, you may be an exception among the ANTI-PINOY losers

or maybe the only loser is Rafterman who wrote the article, I don’t care

But for him to say ALL PINOYS ARE TAMAD AND LOVE TO PARTY that is generalizing which is the worst thing this website does

    NILALAHAT NIYO

Do you know how much money Japan spends in their almost weekly festivities all around the country called Matsuri?

Do you know how much the US spends on partying and fireworks on July 4 celebrations?

They spend a lot too because they can afford it or may be wala rin silang mga pera after the festivities.

You never know, you can never really compare

So hindi lang Pinoy ang ganun…

At kung may tamad man hindi lahat tamad

Like I said DO NOT GENERALIZE

What may be true for 1 person doesn’t mean everyone is like that

Thailand has been labeled WHORE country for many years, so nag-aalsa sila kasi di naman lahat tao dun WHORES eh

    Get it?

So stop generalizing kasi you just create enemies among nasasagasaan nyo, durog durog na…

All Pinoys against most Pinoys = What’s the difference?

The point is that the majority of Filipinos who have those negative traits seem to outnumber those who don’t.

So does it boil down to this: Okay na kaming mga mahihirap. Tutal naman masaya na kami eh. Chaka blessed kami because we will inherit the earth.

A lot of the Antipinoy Bloggers are my facebook friends and yes, we do party. I organize parties myself and get invited. The pictures are all on our walls. But Pinoys in general just take it to the next level. I know of a registered nurse who just hosts weekly parties in his place. The time and energy it takes to do it really drains him but sige pa rin. In contrast my other nurse friend who does not party too much now owns a few elderly care facilities and can sit easier than his counterpart who partied too much (na ayun, nagtatrabaho pa rin ng parang kalabaw so he can have more money to party with). The former is more prevalent among Pinoys than the latter.

Generalising is to characterise the collective without necessarily saying that all members of said collective are characterised.

The Japanese for example are considered to be an “industrious people”. But saying they are an “industrious people” is not the same as saying that EACH AND EVERY Japanese person is industrious. There are lazy Japanese individuals too. But the overall collective outcome of the Japanese society is a strong and prosperous nation.

See the difference, dude? You’re the one being overly defensive here. And it is severely CLOUDING your thinking faculties.

I think looking for “something/someone to motivate us” is the exact attitude that another of rafterman’s post was trying to point out. we should kill that attitude.

    Spot on, Mr. Kahlil!!!

Why this emphasis on messiahs when we have it all within ourselves to change the trajectories of our individual lives.

I dare say, even this emphasis on finding the “right president” is misguided. I think the issue here is the general tolerance range for the quality of our presidents as factors in our ability to prosper. The Chinese people for example are able to prosper as a distinct ethnic group within a BROAD range of business environments and quality of governance. Whether it is in corrupt societies or in advanced well-governed societies, the Chinese are a consistent economic/industrial force in their host societies.

Pinoys will prosper or will FAIL within a broad range of governance quality. There is NO STRONG CORRELATION between our future fortunes AND who or what kind of person sits in Malacanang — just as a who’s-who of “heroes” and individual achievers have come and gone over the ENTIRE history of the Philippines without any evidence that they actually influenced the overall/general ability of Pinoys as a sovereign people to progress as a society.

The fundamental issue REMAINS in our character as a people. And an effort to change must begin there. We must question the very values and belief systems we observe without question. It is not easy, much as an ability to see what is so wrong with our attitude towards “heroes” seems to escape the minds of the average Pinoy.

Hihingi ng masmataas para gawin on time.

    14. Sharpen the plane.
    15. Manually shave the piece of wood.
    16 Feels the wood.
    17. Kwento.
    18. Time Out

Karpentero outside da pinas typical workday would be (B):

    1. Time In.
    2. Plug electric planer
    3. Shave the wood
    4. Take a break. Kwento.
    5. Shave the wood.
    6. Take a break. Kwento.
    7. Shave the wood.
    8. Clean the workplace.
    8. Time Out

Assuming, both are paid equally per hour at the onset, you are getting more done with (B) than (A).

When market forces kick in, adjustments are made for productivity, (A) gets lower rates due to lower productivity, (B) is able to charge a premium due to high productivity.

Factor in the constant cost of the essentials, (A) keeps up with (B) in terms of entertainment.

The difference is (B) has more disposable income because he has higher compensation.

    (A) – in turn, has to lower allocation for essentials. In order to meet the essentials, (A) resorts to borrowing either from relatives and friends, even loan sharks, or even resort to gambling, or selling off property.

In due time, (A) will be deep in debt, barely able to make ends meet – but still wants to “fiesta” and “party” – then blames the government for his misery.

    The Pinoy karpintero work day…

*facepalm* That explains it. No wonder we spent much more on renovating the house. Kasi andaming sira. When we looked closely at the cupboards in the kitchen, tabingi lahat! Ang pangit din ng paint job. Yung mga doors hindi nagsasara ng maayos. And I knew a karpintero who went to work on the house next door STONE DRUNK.

Classic. This is why my parents tell me that if I want to buy a house in the Philippines, I have to be prepared to spend more on renovating it. That and I would have to supervise them every single day.

And the scary part is that this sloppy work in construction is common.

Thus, other readers out there, the connection should be clear. Corruption happens when the people do not have any appreciation at all for excellence or achieving a high standard. Or just even for just doing things the right way. They want to do things any way they want and still win. Like earning money without working, or fitting a square nail into a circular hole and saying, “it fits!”

The construction workers in my example have no appreciation for doing the job right or satisfying the standards of their clients. They just want their pay now so they can get drunk tomorrow. Even if the job is poorly done, and the house will collapse, they still want their pay. There is no justice in their actions. They are complaining that they are poor and insist that they deserve the treatment of their mistakes being glossed over every time. But they are among the ones contributing to the downfall of their country.

Batang Tondo,Generalizations work like this: If you’re wearing a black shirt for instance, even if you have white markings on it or a little of red or some other colors, you still refer to that shirt as black, even while there are obvious parts of it that are of a different color. Generalizations go for the predominant trait or attribute of the collective or thing being described or characterized.BTW, just a suggestion, but if you want to improve Philippine cinema while improving society at the same time, [1] be different by trying to depict rich people as good, virtuous, and masipag, instead of evil and unjust–this is an old and tired scenario that only makes people think being poor is equivalent to being good. Movies provide a model for people to emulate,[2] stop overusing predictable formulas like pinoy telenovelas or movies do,[3] stop overusing regular “heavy drama” (puro iyakan, sampalan, sigawan) & “emotionalism” ad nauseam,[4] start emphasizing progress, perhaps industrial or scientific progress especially in Philippine setting to spark the imagination especially of the youth. (a lot of the CEOs of hi-tech companies in the US had life changing experiences watching such movies, which pretty much set their direction later in life). If you’re really into heroes, why not create a sort of scientist-cum-businessman-industrialist hero like Ironman for instance in Philippine setting. Most, if not all, of our heroes based their powers on “agimats” instead of science.Hoping for success in your cinematic endeavors

Give the candidates equal treatment – past performance, platforms, roadblocks, strengths, weaknesses. This is definitely not an interview type of thing. This will be more along the lines of a Michael Moore-esque look at the candidates AND… a hard look at voter’s preferences – what can be done differently in order to achieve different results – empower instead of condoning the victim mentality.

    Batang Tondo

What’s this? You have come and gone and I missed it! Damn this beauty sleep! :)

Anyway, in case you visit again and I’m not here, I just want to say that you don’t have to say goodbye for good. The boys can be a toughie but they really have a soft heart.

You know with this fiesta thing or the Filipino fondness for fiestas, here’s what I have to say about it:

We got that tradition from the Spaniards. If there is one bad thing we inherited from them it’s the fondness for fiesta (and siesta). We don’t have to keep doing it just because we have been doing it for so long.

If we want to keep the tradition, we should at least tone it down especially now that we’re having a financial crisis. We have to start thinking about the future and save up.

You might say that people with money have the right to party hard because they’ve earned it. The problem is, when poor people see this frequently, the poor might think that the only way to be happy is by having parties as well.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against parties. I actually enjoy attending one but, a party is a fleeting thing. You organise one for weeks or days and it will last for only a few hours or so and then everybody has to go home. After the party, everyone will experience a post-party let down. You know, this is when you’ve experienced such a high and then you have to go back down to earth thing after. It is quite unsustainable. It can be addictive. People behave differently when they are having a party, it can be a shallow activity and wasteful too. It should not be done excessively especially when you are poor. I don’t know how the rich in the country can even conduct lavish parties when they are surrounded by poverty. But hey, it’s their money. Unfortunately though, the poor emulate them in their own way and then there’s this whole preoccupation with partying all their life.

What we all need, not just Filipinos but everyone who is addicted to the highs of a party or a fiesta, is to find a more sustainable activity which will make life more meaningful. Find a worthy cause (like Efren) or a hobby. We don’t have to be surrounded by people and eating banquets like tomorrow is the end of the world just to feel good about ourselves. At the end of the day, when everyone has left or back in their own little world, we need to be comfortable with ourselves and being on our own. We have to realise that a party cannot make our problems disappear.

So, what can we do? The people with money should lead by example and exercise restraint. They should exhibit simplicity and thriftiness. Then maybe, just maybe, the poor people will follow suit.

I know I make it sound so simple but hey, isn’t it? People just make their lives complicated by having too many parties, really. :)

Mar Rosales -

panget kasi ang ekonomy sa pinas, coupled with a huge, rapidly-growing population. Sorry ka na lang Mar Rosales at wala nang tumanggap na kumpanya, but that’s part of the collective failure of Pinoy society.

So ayan, laging outpaced ng population growth ang economic growth, kaya laging more jobseekers than jobs available. Kaya tayo maraming nag-oOFW. kasi walang trabaho sa Pinas.

Ayun, sobrang party at saya, kaya in the end, dumadami ang mga anak. Worse, marami rin ang single parents. Mga disgrasyada, super dami na. BAkit?

Resulta?

    Gising, Pinoy, gising!

Hihi… aside from “stop being lazy and stop partying” I see that you also miss “stop being stupid” (refer to his examples.)

Actually, the author is more concerned with just too much partying. The underlying message is for Pinoys to aim to become more productive & contribute to the economy rather than squander their time on self-indulgent activities which doesn’t do much to move the country forward.

HEY YOU MOTHER ****ING IDIOT, GABBY D!!!

    TANGA KA TALAGA!

Someone should beat the crap out of you!!!

    Putanginamo!!!

You know GabbyD, it’s the collective failure of Pinoy Society that is the problem. So many Mar Rosales is hard-working. Well, tough luck!

Far too many other Filipinos aren’t that hardworking, so instead, the Philippine Economy is unfortunately not strong enough to keep expanding in order to absorb Mar Rosales the hard working man.

    Why?

Because if Mar Rosales is AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE (rule = generalization) and thus most other people are lazy or party animals, the productivity level of their work does not create high performance results that would improve the entire Philippine Economy to justify expansions and new hiring. One man – Mar Rosales – can’t do it alone. It has to be MOST Filipinos. And in fact, it has to be more than 80% of all working and employed Filipinos working their asses off to create a strong economy in order to create more opportunities for everyone else.

And party doesn’t always just mean birthday party. It means just having fun, tagay, inuman, happy-happy, lazing around, and not doing real work most of the time.

That’s the problem, see, Gabby D?

Stop being a ****ing idiot, OK?!?

Filipinos are “partying all the time” is a way of saying na puro aliw at libangan lang ang inaatupag ng mga Pilipino. Doesn’t mean all Pinoys go to Embassy or Ascend or have birthday parties in their house all the time.

    YOU ARE STUPID, GABBY D!!!

    ****ing tambay!!!

No one said that it’s hopeless. What makes it hopeless is MOTHER****ERS LIKE YOU!

Guess what. If Filipinos realized that this laziness and partying-too-much bit was getting us nowhere and in fact contributing to our lack of economic progress, thereby making us more corrupt (bad economic prospects do make people do immoral things just to make ends meet), then Pinoys WOULD CHANGE.

But you see, GABBY ****ING D, ****s like you who don’t know squat are DENYING that Pinoy Society has a problem that needs to be fixed.

If you convince everyone to DENY that we need to fix ourselves (get rid of stupidity, laziness, excuses-making like what you do, being blind to reality) and everyone DOES DENY that we all have a real problem, then NO ONE WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. People will think everything is fine, people lwill continue to be lazy, people will continue to just party.

BUT IF YOU ADMIT that there are problems, and if MOST OTHER FILIPINOS also ADMIT that laziness is not good, Filipinos are unfortunately generally lazy, and many Filipinos do a lot of stupid things, and that these are the causes for our chronic poverty and lack of progress, then guess what:

    FILIPINOS WILL CHANGE.

But Filipinos won’t change if you (and others) DON’T ADMIT IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Sabi nga ng isang ex-drug addict… The first step into getting clean is ACKNOWLEDGING THAT YOU ARE DIRTY and that YOU NEED HELP.

If you think the life of a junkie is just fine with you, then you won’t want to get therapy and get cleaned up.

But if you ADMIT that you are a junkie and that life as a junkie SUCKS, then you will decide to make steps.

    It’s that simple.

BUT THEN AGAIN, GABBY D, YOU ARE A ****ING GODDAMNED PUTANINGA IDIOT so you like to lie to yourself and to the public and twist words and make STUPID EXCUSES to justify laziness and stupidity,

…so you ****ing deserve to DIE.

Eat **** and DIE, GABBY D!

But if you ADMIT that you were wrong and admit that Filipinos need to change and get rid of stupidity, laziness, and too much partying, and get serious about fixing this country, then congratulations, I can be your friend.

But until you do that, I will hunt you down and when I find you, I will torture you until you offer to EAT YOUR DICK so that I stop the pain!!

And while you’re at it, baka naman you have special skills or knowledge that you have gained that can shed light on why you see things differently from how Rafterman and most of the people here see things.

Once you jump into the bandwagon of laziness, stupidity, and short-sighted gratification aspirations, it will take GENERATIONS before the Condition can be eradicated from the society and its culture.

You know that economic theories rest on certain assumptions regarding human social behaviour right? (i.e. while the mathematical aspects may be rigorous, when applied to concrete cases, economics require said social behavioral assumptions) Human behavior cannot be totally reduced to something totally quantifiable and calculable–Even statistics has its limits.

I already posted the following answer in another post where you ask it. So I copy it here kasi ayoko na pong mag-retype.

Because I am a Filipino in the Philippines, nakikita ko po yung kapaligiran ko eh. Medyo mahirap pagtaguan ang araw-araw kong nakikita.

    Eto sir ang mga sinabi:

    1) GENERALLY filipinos are lazy
    2) GENERALLY filipinos party too much
    3) GENERALLY filipinos are stupid

Kasi totoo naman Sir based on my own observations. Take note Sir, nasa probinsya ako nakatira so talagang kitang-kita ko ang katotohanang yan.

Yung number 1, sobrang obvious dito sa probinsya.

NO CHOICE, I must AGREE: mas marami ang mga nakikita kong tamad than there are masipag people.

Yung number 2, ako mismo nakikita ko yun with my own eyes.

Kasi naman po Sir, I live in the province. I’m in Bocaue. And I see all this things. So I really cannot disagree kasi po totoo po ang nakikita ko, and I have seen this all the time ever since I was born.

Wala naman Sir, just trying to see your point of view. Tell us your perspective. Maybe it’s one-sided or maybe it’s base on a specific elite locale na baka naman Sir hindi po siya representative of the typical Philippine setting.

I mean no offense Sir, just asking lang talaga sir.

Basta ako po Sir, I live in a very typical Filipino neighborhood in a very typical Filipino setting kasi naman Sir probinsya po ang lugar namin.

As I said, I have no choice but to agree kasi naman po sir yun mismo ang aking personal experience and observation.

Ano po ang background ninyo, Sir? Are you a social scientist or anthropologist? Please naman share, Sir.

    Manice,

I agree na di naman every Pinoy tamad… pero karamihan is still accurate for me.

The CHURCH just preach but they don’t even really do something for the people.
They just talk but no action has been done.
Think about the population explosion in this country as the world’s #13 most populous country!

    why hide under generalizations?

Sir Gabriel, please answer my questions, po.

I’m not saying it is wrong, Sir, I just want to understand your background and point of view.

Tsaka Sir, are you a sociologist or anthropologist?

    Sir Gabby,

Ano pong trabaho niyo at field of specialization? As I said, importante sa akin na malaman ang background niyo para maintindihan ang reason why you are not admitting the obvious observations.

As I said, yung field of specialization niyo po may influence your point of view.

Ako kasi Sir, I don’t want to believe. I want to know. So for me, it’s based on observation. Kung panget ang nakikita ko at ayaw ko ang nakikita ko, I just have to accept kasi ganun nga ang nakikita ko. Ngayon kung talagang ayaw ko nga siya, I can try to change it.

In fact ang observations ko don’t agree with them. My observations agree with reality.

Feel free to add anything else. Baka kasi Sir may masamang nangyari sa inyo or na-trauma kayo which is why parang hindi po kayo mapa-amin sa katotohanan.

Paki-sagot lang please: background (job/college major) and location. Thanks, Sir Gabriel!

    what does that tell you?

    BabyFats Reply:
    December 8th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

    Hello Sir GabbyD,

I don’t feel 1-3 is true. I observe it as true. Hindi ito based on feeling or based on gusto. This is what I see all the time. Everywhere I go, yan ang nakikita ko: katamaran, puro hilig sa goodtime, at kabobohan. Actually nga, even when I go to Manila, I see all of that, especially doon sa may Sampaloc. My cousin lives in Dos Castillas lapit sa Forbes (now called AH Lacson) at Espana, at paglumuluwas ako, doon ako sa kanila. Same thing ang nakikita ko around the neighborhood. So it’s not feeling Sir GabbyD, it’s true observation.

Anyway, you are asking how can it help me? Well, Sir Gabby, if you tell me where you live and what you do and maybe where you went to high school and college, then siguro I can have a better idea.

Baka naman kasi your friends and everyone around you is all very high quality kasi nga ganun sa mga gated subdivision na pang-mayaman.

So Sir Gabby, if you answer me that you are an investment broker, who went to Ateneo, and live in Dasmarinas Village in Makati, then at least you can give me an idea of why you are not able to observe the obivious truth that everyone see in the Philippines.

Please be specific Sir Gabby. Here are the questions:

    - Where did you grow up? (Baranggay/Village, District, City, Country)
    - Where are you now? (Baranggay/Village, District, City, Country)
    - What is your training/major? (exact course in college and specialization)
    - What is your job now? (profession, what exactly you do, what company)
    - Where did you go to high school and college? (name of high school and college)

Ang mga ito Sir, are helpful to me, kasi kung nasagot niyo po ang mga yan na hindi po kayo nagsisinungaling, then I can make a better assessment of why you don’t accept the obvious facts in the Philippines. I’m not judging you, but I just want to know your point of view.

It’s like a person asking another person who refuses to go near any dogs or cats at all, “why are you afraid of dogs and cats?” Malay mo, yung may phobia, nagkaphobia kasi nakagat siya noong bata siya. Or siguro may kaibigan siyang nakagat ng aso at nagka-rabies tapos namatay.

Kasi nga Sir, I want to know where you are coming from. Kasi nga parang hindi niyo pa kasi nakikita ang mga sinasabi sa article eh, but most people in the Philippines can see that. Yung mga iba kasi, nagbubulag-bulagan lang.

I just want to know kung ano ba talaga ang reason for your denial of the truth. Please answer my questions, para naman I can make a fair assessment of your background instead of dismissing you as “may diperensya.”

    Fair?

    A couple of salient points:

[1] Generalizations (as I have explained to Batang Tondo) take the [predominant] effects of the collective not necessarily each and every individual or member of that collective. Let me clarify it with 3 examples:

    • If you are wearing a black shirt, the shirt may have white markings or colors other than black, but you may still refer to that shirt as black as it is the predominant trait through which you characterize that shirt. (It doesn’t necessarily mean that every thread in that shirt has to be black)
    • If a brick wall is 9 feet it doesn’t mean that each and every brick that makes up that wall is 9 feet. They may be just 5 inches taken individually, but collectively, they make a 9 feet brick wall.
    • In fact the monitor of the computer that you look at is made up of only Red, Green, & Blue pixels, but taken together they can form practically every color of the spectrum and shades of gray, in spite of the fact that they individually only fall within those 3 basic colors

In other words, the exceptions do not negate the predominant trait or rule of the collective. It is the collective end-result that we are characterizing.

The Pinoy collective is the issue here and not individual pinoys (you have to comprehend the gist of the message,) that’s why a careful distinction is being made between collective accomplishments and individual accomplishments.

[2] Laziness is not just a matter of misinformation, it is a matter of decision to act upon that information. There are people who should know better but still do pretty stupid things, until they decide to change. It is also a matter of will or persuasion and not only intellect or knowledge.

If you’re referring to pinoy OFWs, they tend to be masipag because they are forced by a foreign culture, but we are referring to Pinoys mostly in the PI.

    [Reply]

    GabbyD Reply:
    December 8th, 2009 at 2:45 pm

yes, i agree with your definition of generalization.

even if not ALL pinoys fall under that 1-3, most individuals do — acording to you, diba?

    correct?

yes, i also agree that laziness is not just a matter of misinformation.

but as you said: “There are people who should know better but still do pretty stupid things, until they decide to change.”

here’s a question: when/if they decide to change, are they lazy?

    [Reply]

    Guest Reply:

In fact, that is why authors like these write these kinds of articles. They believe that if one calls attention to those flaws Pinoys have and are made to be accountable for them, then hopefully, Pinoys would eventually change.

    GabbyD Reply:
    December 8th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

so is this a special kind of lazy?

the kind of lazy that stops becoming lazy because of new information?

and you say that this kind of lazy isnt called “lack of information”? its called… something else?

    Filo Reply:
    December 11th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

the kind of lazy that stops becoming lazy because of new information?

Perhaps a preoccupation with what sort of lazy you’d like to call it is an exercise in futility. What does make sense about what you’ve just said is that yes, once a person acts on a problem of which he has been made fully aware, he stops being lazy (unless he fails on his first few tries and reverts back to old behaviour).

The thing with what you’ve just said is this – presence of new information alone doesn’t necessarily get people moving unless they acknowledge this newfound information. Some truths would be staring people in the face and still they’d be in denial because it’s outside an established comfort zone for them.

So people with a genuine desire to do better can actually shed their laziness, though we can also expect that to save face, some Pinoys will deny ever being lazy in the first place. (That’s really up to them, and it’s not the issue here.)

    GabbyD Reply:
    December 8th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

you may want to work on better examples tho…

    specifically:

“If a brick wall is 9 feet it doesn’t mean that each and every brick that makes up that wall is 9 feet. They may be just 5 inches taken individually, but collectively, they make a 9 feet brick wall.”

its the wall that 9 feet, not the bricks. this is not generalization.

“In fact the monitor of the computer that you look at is made up of only Red, Green, & Blue pixels, but taken together they can form practically every color of the spectrum and shades of gray, in spite of the fact that they individually only fall within those 3 basic colors”

this is not generalization either. the individual color characteristics of RG and B disappear when you use RGB together — i.e. they form OTHER colors. same with CMYK color style.

unless you mean, that individuals disappear when you consider a nation, or a race? iba na yan!

If “brick wall” confuses you, then try a “pile of bricks” or simply “those bricks,” the same way we refer to those Pinoys or simply dropping “those” or even “most” and simply saying “Pinoys“–this is also along the same lines as “Americans voted for Obama as President” which is true in that sense, even when we know for a fact that many also did not vote for Obama. It is a collective act in other words.

The RGB colors never disappear. They are still and always there, but you’re talking from the point of view of the person looking at the monitor. Individuals do not disappear, but their collective efforts (or lack thereof) result in a predominant trait.

    GabbyD Reply:
    December 8th, 2009 at 4:39 pm

if its a pile of bricks, then

    1) its not a wall
    2) its not a wall that is 9 fit high

a pile of bricks is a different entity than each constituent brick.

if you want to describe the individual bricks, go ahead and do so. hence i agree with your first example, if you want to call them red bricks, even if they are not perfectly red, thats fine.

yes, i’m talking about the individual who looks at it. there is no other POV.

    Guest Reply:
    December 8th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Nope, in fact, a “pile of bricks” can form & be called a “wall of bricks” or even a “wall of bricks that is 9 ft high” if the pile is in fact that high.

I am also talking about the individual or, in this case, the author, who looks at Pinoy society and says, “Pinoys are such and such,” leaving it to us readers to use our common-sense to comprehend the context of his message, as it is a fair assessment to make that the author himself is very well aware of the exceptions.

    GabbyD Reply:
    December 8th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

something is a “wall” when it encloses an area. but you know what, yes, i agree, a pile of bricks that happen to enclose an area is ALSO a wall :)

Actually, not without needing to break it down for you into something almost as simple as A-B-C & correcting some of your misinterpretations could we have arrived at a clear point of agreement.

It is also false that we can make just any kind of generalizations without any basis in reality or empirical facts. My initial interpretation is in line with the author’s (rafterman’s) own interpretation.

Nonetheless, it was an interesting exercise.

If I may add, think about it: Chinese-Filipinos or tsinoys tend to be far more successful than mere “locals” or more “native” types even under the same corrupt system, same climate and harsh weather, and same access to basic resources. What particular traits do each of these groups have that made one generally more affluent than the other, given the same set of circumstances? Affluence is man-made and not something that just happens at random or out of the blue.

But he likes to force people to take his views. Grabe siya Sir Tao. Parang may diperensya yata.

Pero I’m still open to knowing his background. Also, I want to know where in the Philippines he lives para naman maintindihan ko kung bakit di raw siya nakaka-witness ng mga observations sa article. It is like he is in denial eh.

let me add an argument to this mix…

people have been using arguments of the form

    1) filipinos (generally, usually, ..) are lazy
    2) filipinos (….) party too much
    3) filipinos (…) are stupid.

i’ve been consistent — people are free to make this determination based on whatever evidence in their lives.

but i have 1 thing to add to this argument based on freedom. it is this:

statements 1-3 follow the form “(BLANK1) are (BLANK2)”

where BLANK1 is either a biological grouping of people (chinese, blacks), OR a nationality/people (filipinos, americans, mexicans, christians, muslims, etc)

and BLANK2 is an adjective, in this case negative (Lazy, stupid, late, arrogant, etc)

note that this is fully consistent with the definition of racism here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism#cite_note-M-W-0

because, to quote the article: “Racial discrimination typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, although ANYONE may be discriminated against on an ethnic or cultural basis, independently of their somatic differences.” [emphasis mine]

hence, statements based on 1-3 are RACIST statements/arguments.

now, not all racist statements are BAD.

i will list 2 reasons for which racist arguments NEED NOT be bad (the first), and where it SOMETIMES is justifiable (the second).

    1) humor — it should be ok to make fun of/mock a people. it may not be Funny, but as long as its not done maliciously, it should be ok.

    2) racial profiling for criminal purposes/ affirmative action
here, it may be necessary to use racial stereotypes to help law enforcement. for example: if blacks are known to steal cars, the police might be disproportionately suspicious of blacks and arrest them relatively more frequently.

or, if there are few latina women in a high position, there might be a law that says, for every white person you hire, you must hire a latina woman.

SOMETIMES, doing these things might be a good idea. but not all the time, and certainly, you dont want to contiinue treating people like this forever.

i’m not sure whether the arguments here fits into a bin called “good reasons for racist arguments” it might! after all, a number of people have said that this is all to spur change! change is good! if so, you have to contend with the idea of how lazy, stupid people can change for the better. seems like a very unlikely thing to happen, if it were true!

but at the very least, we should acknowledge that the argument is racist, and move from there. agree?

finally, i have been retiscent about my own opinion about 1-3.

my opinion, shaped by personal experience, is simply this: there are lazy filipinos and there are non-lazy filipinos. there are smart ones, and not smart ones. there are partiers, and non-partiers. same as everywhere else in this world. thats it.

Nah, I don’t think so GabbyD.

    Let’s use a sports analogy.

Say one team is found to be a better team than another. That observation implies that said other team is inferior to the first.

Does it necessarily mean every player in the first is excellent and every player in the other sucks?

Not necessarily (although it is a possibility).

It could mean that players in the first team play well together while the other consistently fail to build esprit among its players.

Scale that up to an entire country like the Philippines and ask yourself:

    Why does the Philippines suck?

Is it because each and every Pinoy sucks?

Or is it because the collective or emergent outcome of the behaviour of all Filipinos taken as a people suck?

In a contest where the score is economic output, the Philippine nation is a team composed of individual players. We all want Da Pinas to be a winner. Unfortunately we seem to be unable to win as a nation.

    It’s simple, really;)

    Kanto boy Reply:
    December 9th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

    Gabriel the Dodo,

A racist argument is usually done by A on B. That is, a group other than the group being described.

If members of a group criticizes their own group for shortcomings that prevent their group from succeeding, then that is not racist. In fact, that’s patriotic. If you want your own group to succeed, you always need to find ways to make it succeed, and that also means finding out what are keeping the group from succeeding.

But if you insist on keeping the group weak by disallowing certain members of the group from finding areas needing improvement, then you are against the group because you want the group to remain weak.

And if you want the group the remain weak, you deserve to be skewered and tortured until the pain is too much so that you offer to eat your own dick to make me stop the pain. ;)

How’s the Bay Area, Gabriel? ;)

    GabbyD,

Maybe you’re not seeing that those assessments about Filipinos generally being:

    1. illogical/stupid
    2. lazy
    3. hedonistic

…don’t represent permanent characteristics, but rather just happen to be current “at-the-time” descriptions that are similar to symptoms of a disease. Filipinos generally need not be 1, 2, & 3 forever and ever. Which means that Filipinos CAN BE CURED of these.

The implication, therefore, is that Filipinos exhibit these characteristics and these are characteristics that keep us from progressing as a nation. But since they are like symptoms of a disease or diseases, they can be cured. If they can be cured, then therefore the Philippines CAN MOVE FORWARD and progress.

Going back to the original article, the general idea is that:

    1. Filipinos are generally more illogical than Chinese, Vietnamese, Singaporeans, Koreans, Japanese, etc
    2. Filipinos are generally lazier than Chinese, Vietnamese, Singaporeans, Koreans, Japanese, etc
    3. Filipinos are generally more hedonistic than Chinese, Vietnamese, Singaporeans, Koreans, Japanese, etc

There was a point of comparison, and if you look at it objectively, there are major differences as well. All these people (or countries) are more progressive, richer, or have a faster economic growth rate than the Philippines. Items 1, 2, & 3 are reasons that easily explain this, because apparently, Corruption seems to exist in all those other societies anyway.

Maybe you shouldn’t be over-sensitive to these objectively verifiable facts. You should, instead, spend more time trying to seek solutions on HOW TO ELIMINATE these undesirable traits that keep the Philippines (as well as general Filipino communities) from progressing in comparison to their more progressive neighbors.

but i agree wit you abguitarte…

    the ONLY way to have
    1) filipinos be lazy, etc..

    AND

    2) filipinos can change, etc…

is if u believe that its only a temporary characteristic, non-permanent.

if you think that filipinos can be BOTH lazy and able to change, then thats fine.

people have been using arguments of the form

    1) filipinos (generally, usually, ..) are lazy
    2) filipinos (….) party too much
    3) filipinos (…) are stupid.

You missed the part which goes

    predicate 1-1
    predicate 1-2
THEREFORE, filipinos (generally, usually, ..) are lazy

    predicate 2-1
    predicate 2-2
THEREFORE, filipinos (….) party too much

    predicate 3-1
    predicate 3-2
    THEREFORE, filipinos (…) are stupid.
Those aren’t assumptions – those are conclusions.

also there’s the form which goes

filipinos (generally, usually, ..) are lazy BECAUSE:
    predicate 1-2
    predicate 1-1

filipinos (….) party too much BECAUSE:
    predicate 2-1
    predicate 2-2

    filipinos (…) are stupid BECAUSE:
    predicate 3-1
    predicate 3-2

if you add a statement that says the predicate is operative due to skin color, then that’s racist. otherwise, it is NOT racist.

    Compare that to this approach,

filipinos (generally, usually, ..) are lazy THAT’S WHY
    describe behavior 1-1
    describe behavior 1-2

filipinos (….) party too much THAT’S WHY:
    describe behavior 2-1
    describe behavior 2-2

    filipinos (…) are stupid BECAUSE:
    describe behavior 3-1
    describe behavior 3-2

Usually the perception is that the latter approach is being implied (inductive) when it is actually the former (deductive).

The conclusion is turned into an assumption, which kinda puts the cart before the horse.

    Whaddya think?

    1) what are these predicates? what proves “filipinos are BLANK”…?

how can one say that in an objective manner, hence to PROVE “filipinos are BLANK”?

    2) note that the definition of racism is independent of whether “Blank1 is blank2″ a conclusion or a premise/assumption

in fact, when under the examples i gave, humor or racial profiling — the verdict that you can use race to have different treatment is somewhat justified. its still racism — but its good racism. see also the wiki page…

for example, what are the possible predicates when filipinos are prone to vote for vacuous actors and actresses into the senate, congress, and the presidency. thst comes with the predicates. filipinos voted for vacuous actors. filipinos voted for clueless actresses. filipinos vote for vacuous actors and acresses. starstruck ignoramus is not an assumption, it is a conclusion.

I notice that Filipinos are very quick and proud to be generalized themselves with the likes of Efren Penaflorida, pacman and other succesful pinoys (who are only one among a million), and be on denial and really get over-defensive when generalized with the REAL MAJORITY of ordinary pinoys.

Lets get real guys, although, there are indeed exceptionally great and hardworking Filipinos, MAJORITY of us are not successful because of laziness and obsession with enjoyment. And I agree with the article that this is the PROBLEM of our society and it causes corruption.

The truth does HURT, but we need to accept it and FACE it to be able to move forward as a nation.

We cannot always just sugar coat the shortfalls of the Filipino majority with the success and hard work of only a few.

True, nfg. The words “denial” and “over-defensive” are spot-on.

People can’t accept and face it, They become too hurt by the truth, often mistaking it as an insult to them and to other Filipinos. It’s not worth engaging with them when they become emotional and illogical at once. Sadly, I’ve seen this happen too many times.

Our damaged psyche/culture (as pointed out by the late Teddy Benigno in the 90′s) has gotten worse. Nobody listened to Teddyman back then, so why should I believe that more people are listening now? Although I’m happy to see sites like these, I honestly don’t see how much of an impact they can make since the “larger” majority of voters don’t have access to a computer. In fact, I see more despair and disappointment for Pinoys in 2010, and only time will tell if I’m proven wrong.

I certainly appreciate the efforts of the brilliant minds in here to reach out to others. I know it’s an uphill battle, but I’m already burned-out from decades of relying on hope.

Ganundin Sir, if the politicians themselves hire people to research for them o kaya sila mismo nagsu-surf sa net. Siguro if they read the ideas in these sites, they can learn new things and implement them as policies.

Buti na nga lang Sir this site exists to tell the truth to these people who can influence others.

I am a Filipino in my blood runs the blood of Juan, I am not mixed and we are not wealthy. As a child i never asked any material things fr my parents even my father worked abroad. I contented myself looking at the toys in the display store, me and bro fantasizing if we were just invisible we cld play at them. T’was mid 80′s i was in elementary i have 2 pesos for my baon. i have to walk back and forth if i want to eat. Then college come yr y2k i have 100 pesos for a day and it was 4rides to sch. I save my allowance if i want to watch a movie in weekends or if i have projects. I still go to “inuman session” with my barkadas. those ginpom party. Its nice to unwind w/ friends. After graduation i decided to work abroad i still have 2 brothers, sick mom and my father left us to be w/ d creator. I dont know where the hell is that country i am goin to, dont know anything about the job but i managed to pass the interview. I went in a foreign land w/ a foreign language, battled w/ homesickness, w/ racism that really crushed u, white ppl wld step on u because ur asian but its okay through pain and fatigue i managed to send my brothers to a fine schools, buy them nice things, a home my mom cld call her own, got my sisters to work here w/ me. Help donate to less fortunate kids for education, Visit and teach old people how to write in my spare time. In my own lil ways i still want to reach someone.
Work has given me the opportunity to see the different parts of the world and i can say i would still want to live in the Philippines. I miss the warmth, the Christmas spirit that makes me happy whenever i set foot in pinas.I miss my mother language and my mothers soil. No one beats home!
I do go out and paint the town red..did a drinking spree, and party like a rockstar cuz if not i’ll go crazy. My body clock is pretty messed up, i always deal w/ grumpy, complaining ppl who are not happy w/ everything, my life is always at risk, different weathers, busted eardrums, i pay mortgages, allowances, tuition fees, house allowance, tons of credit card debt and etc. So yes..i would definitely like to go out and parteey.

Dont envy or judge other ppl unless u’ve been on their shoes……………………

Merry Christmas and GodBless to all

    Dear Janice

Just some advice if you care to listen. If your body clock is messed up, I suggest you take some time out from partying and devote it instead to the recovery of your health by resting.

Also, if you are miserable with your job and hate the people you work with, you should learn new skills with your extra time instead of partying. You can use that new skill to find another job. Getting a hobby is also a good thing. You never know if a new hobby will lead to a thriving business one day.

The money you save when you’re not spending your extra cash from partying will help in paying for your mortgages, tuition fees and etc, etc.

You might think that partying will help you deal with your wretched existence, but it actually makes it worse because you are just going through life without any foreseeable improvement from your current status.

There are other inexpensive ways of dealing with boredom that will also help expand your knowledge and skills and that is by reading books. Reading might be a new concept to most people but it’s actually quite entertaining.

    You take care now,

    Ilda

You never asked me why its messed up, u assumed its from partying because i did said i do go out. I want to explain even u dont really ask me. My body clock is messed up because in 1 week i could be in Cochin, India, after we land i sleep for 12hrs then off to Perth Australia after that a rest day then I am going to Sao Paulo. You see in months I could be in different time zone. have u ever experience that? I do rest and sleep all day but that doesn’t correct it.
Oh sure i don’t like some of the people i work w/ or ppl i see in every destination. i am human as well like u. Saying that i deal w/ grumpy complaining ppl, i pay mortages, tuition fees debts and etc doesn’t mean i am miserable . I just told u what i deal every day, every month and i believe in every OFW’s life. That doesn’t make us miserable.
I have a hobby and that is teaching and I go to Dhaka, Bangladesh and put bandages on severely burned women.

Groundhog Day Celebrates a Damaged Culture

    July 29th, 2009 by BongV

James Fallows wrote his article “Damaged Culture: A New Philippines? in 1987, a year after EDSA.

It is now 2009, twenty two (22) years after EDSA and still:

The countries that surround the Philippines have become the world’s most famous showcases for the impact of culture on economic development. Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore–all are short on natural resources, but all (as their officials never stop telling you) have clawed their way up through hard study and hard work. Unfortunately for its people, the Philippines illustrates the contrary: that culture can make a naturally rich country poor. There may be more miserable places to live in East Asia– Vietnam, Cambodia–but there are few others where the culture itself, rather than a communist political system, is the main barrier to development. The culture in question is Filipino, but it has been heavily shaped by nearly a hundred years of the “Fil-Am relationship.’ The result is apparently the only non-communist society in East Asia in which the average living standard is going down.

And speaking of elections, the Philippines of 2009 might as well be stuck in 1987:

Democracy has returned to the Philippines, in a big way. As if to make up for all the years when they could not vote, Filipinos have been analyzing the results of one election and preparing for another almost nonstop since early last year. Election disputes have returned too. For three months after the legislative elections last May, long recounts dragged on to determine whether Juan Ponce Enrile, Marcos’s former Defense Minister, whose switch to Aquino helped topple Marcos, would get one of the twenty-four seats in the Senate. Senators are elected nation-wide, in what often resembles a popularity contest. Among the new senators is a Charles Bronson–style action-movie star; Enrile is about as well known as the actor, and though he has made many enemies, most foreigners I spoke with found it hard to believe that in an honest vote count he would have lost to everyone on Aquino’s list of nominees, which included a number of newcomers and nobodies. Finally, in August, he squeaked in as number twenty-four.

The economy? It is same o same o. The conversation below may very well have happened today, or an hour ago, or a minute ago.

Manufacturing? “There were not many viable sectors to begin with, and most of them were taken over by cronies. The industrial sector is used to guarantee monopoly and high-tariff protection. It’s inward-looking, believes it cannot compete. People are used to paying a lot for goods that are okay-to-shoddy in quality. Labor costs are actually quite high for a country at this stage of development. They should be like Sri Lanka’s but they’re like Korea’s, because union organizing has run far ahead of productivity. It’s a poor country–but an expensive place in which to produce. American and Japanese firms have set up some electronics assembly plants, but they’re only buying labor, not building subsidiary industries or anything that adds real value.’

Agriculture? “It’s been heavily skewed for fifty years to plantation crops. All those traditional exports are down, sugar most of all. Copra is okay for the moment, but it’s never going to expand very much. Prawns are the only alternative anybody can think of now.’ Agriculture is also nearly paralyzed by arguments over land ownership. Since the Spanish days land has been concentrated in a few giant haciendas, including the 17,000-acre Hacienda Luisita of the Cojuangco family, and no government has done much to change the pattern. “You could argue that real land reform would lead to more productivity, but it’s an entirely hypothetical argument,’ an Australian economist told me. “This government simply is not going to cause a revolution in the social structure.’ Just before the new Congress convened, as her near-dictatorial powers were about to elapse, Aquino signed a generalized land-reform-should-happen decree. Most observers took this as an indication that land reform would not happen, since the decree left all the decisions about the when, where, and how of land reform to the landowner-heavy Congress.

Services and other industries? “They’re very much influenced by the political climate. I think this has tremendous potential as a tourist country–it’s so beautiful. But they don’t have many other ways to sell their labor, except the obvious one.’ The obvious one is the sex business, visible in every part of the country–and indeed throughout Asia, where Filipino “entertainers’ are common. In Davao, on the southern island of Mindanao, I watched TV one night and saw an ad repeated over and over. Women wanted for opportunities overseas. Qualifications: taller than five feet two inches, younger than twenty-one. When I took cabs in Manila, the drivers routinely inquired if I wanted a woman. When my wife returned our children’s rented inner tubes to a beach vendor at Argao, the vendor, a toothless old woman, asked if she was lonely in her room and needed a hired companion.

Resources? “Exploiting natural resources has always been the base here,’ one of the economists said. “But they’ve taken every tree they can easily get. It’s not like Brazil or Borneo, with another fifty years to rip out the heart of the earth.’ Every single day Japanese diners take hundreds of millions of pairs of chopsticks out of paper wrappers, use them for fifteen minutes, and throw them away. Most of the chopsticks started out as trees in the Philippines, though more and more of them now come from American forests. The Philippines has more naturally spectacular mountains and vistas than Malaysia or Indonesia, but you can travel for miles in the countryside and mainly see eroding hillsides stripped bare of trees. Like Americans who speak of “conquering’ the frontier, Filipinos sometimes take a more romantic view of what “taking every tree’ can mean. F. Sionil Jose, a prominent novelist in his early sixties, who grew up in Ilocos, has written a famous five-volume saga–the Rozales novels–about the migration from the harsh Ilocos region to the fertile plains of central Luzon. The Ilocano migrants made a new life for themselves, he observes, and they did it by cutting down the jungle and planting rice. “There is some hope with minerals and gold,’ one of the economists said. Indeed, a Forty-ninerstyle gold rush is now under way in Mindanao. I was told that communist rebels, Moslem separatists, and former Philippine Army soldiers now work side by side in the gold mines, proving that economic development can be the answer to political problems.

    And the clincher is

Still, for all the damage Marcos did, it’s not clear that he caused the country’s economic problems, as opposed to intensifying them. Most of the things that now seem wrong with the economy–grotesque extremes of wealth and poverty, land-ownership disputes, monopolistic industries in cozy, corrupt cahoots with the government–have been wrong for decades. When reading Philippine novels or history books, I would come across a passage that resembled what I’d seen in the Manila slums or on a farm. Then I would read on and discover that the description was by an American soldier in the 1890s, or a Filipino nationalist in the 1930s, or a foreign economist in the 1950s, or a young politician like Ferdinand Marcos or Benigno Aquino in the 1960s. “Here is a land in which a few are spectacularly rich while the masses remain abjectly poor. . . . Here is a land consecrated to democracy but run by an entrenched plutocracy. Here, too, are a people whose ambitions run high, but whose fulfillment is low and mainly restricted to the self-perpetuating elite.’ The precise phrasing belongs to Benigno Aquino, in his early days in politics, but the thought has been expressed by hundreds of others. Koreans and Japanese love to taunt Americans by hauling out old, pompous predictions that obviously have not come true. “Made in Japan’ would always mean “shoddy.’ Korea would “always’ be poor. Hah hah hah! You smug Yankees were so wrong! Leafing back through Filipinology has the opposite effect: it is surprising, and depressing, to see how little has changed.

And since 1987, the Philippines has remained bleak,- extreme disparity between the rich and the poor, the impunity of political assassins, the corruption, the instability, and the culture – same o same o.

It may be too pessimistic to think of culture as a kind of large-scale genetics, channeling whole societies toward progress or stagnation. A hundred years ago not even the crusading Emperor Meiji would have dreamed that “Japanese culture’ would come to mean “efficiency.’ America is full of people who have changed their “culture’ by moving away from the old country or the home town or the farm. But a culture-breaking change of scene is not an answer for the people still in the Philippines–there are 55 million of them, where would they go?–and it’s hard to know what else, within our lifetimes, the answer might be.

    Recently, The Accidental Migrant wrote:

Our view of Philippine politics is personality-based and mainly centered on the president. We tend to reduce Philippine economic reality to the question of exchange rate between the pound sterling and Philippine peso.

Except for the activism displayed by Filipino domestic workers in claiming their right as workers in this country, we have not gone beyond our translation of Filipino “identity” into those traditional summer barrio fiestas, the beauty contests and dinner parties to raise some money for their pet projects, and our religious gatherings.

The need to translate the respectability we have earned as a migrant workforce into a political power that would demand good governance in the Philippines and to become an important voice in the UK’s foreign policy and overseas development commitments to the Philippines remains a big and ambitious challenge.

The million dollar question – getting from the current/AS-IS state of irresponsibility to the Desired Future/TO-BE State of personal responsibility – of holding and demanding accountability from the government WHILE ensuring one is also accountable for one’s civic obligations remains in oblivion.

The Numbers Do the Talking.. Again

Numbers do talk. But all of us tend to read it differently. Caffeine Sparks was miffed with the numbers

Debt owed to domestic lenders rose from P1.06 trillion in 2000 to P2.4 trillion in 2008. Debt owed to foreign lenders rose from P1.09 trillion to 1.8 trillion in 2008. And the President, dear beloved President in pink, has the gall to say she has “exorcised” debt???

I can understand if FVR will say he “exorcised” debt because it was during his term when the Philippines emerged 35 years of IMF program supervision. Foreign debt is not evil when such debt is used to generate revenues. The question is what is the composition of the 1.09 trillion in debt. If it is debt that does not generate revenue then I agree that Arroyo doesn’t have the gall.

Somehow, I doubt that Speaker Nograles’ proposal to amend the constitution, supposedly to encourage investments, will attract these businesses. They will have to eliminate themselves first.

Well, Item No. 4. Policy Instability – is a euphemism for anti-foreign investments/protectionist policy, specially, when said policy is enshrined in the Constitution under the section on National Patrimony. Since these rent capture protectionist policies are etched in the charter, changing these policies necessitates amending the charter in order to attract business.

As pointed out by Kobayashi, during an ASEAN sponsored conference – There are only two reasons for Global Firms to invest in developing areas

    Establish Export Plants

    – Firms place importance on “operational conditions”

    – The less world economic growth, the more selective firms become

    – The more possible investment destinations, the more selective firms become

    Access to New Markets

    – Firms place importance on “market size” and “future growth opportunities”

    – The less world economic growth, the more attractive these factors appear to firms

3 Factors Are Considered When Choosing an Export Plant Location

    - Geographical/psychological proximity to targeted markets

    - Geographical/psychological proximity to global firms themselves

    - Operational costs (including tariffs, restrictions on foreign investments, etc.) and business environment

The BPO industry has benefited from liberalization. The findings of Shujiro Urata, Professor of Economics, School of Social Science, Waseda University, presented his observations at the US-China-Japan Trilateral Forum in November 11th, 1997 are still relevant:

World foreign direct investment (FDI) has grown rapidly since the early 1980s. Indeed, the rate of increase of world FDI was higher, compared with world trade from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s. As a result of these new developments, FDI has become one of the most important means of integrating the world economy. The role of FDI in the world economy would be significantly greater, if the impact of FDI on various economic activities is considered. FDI enables investing firms to utilize their firm-specific assets such as technologies and managerial know-how efficiently, while FDI recipients can obtain not only the funds for investment but also efficient technologies and know-how. Furthermore, FDI recipients can enjoy the benefits by gaining an access to various networks such as sales and procurement networks being developed by investing firms.

There are some factors that may be important for all types of FDI. A well-functioning legal system is crucial as it provides protection of assets owned by foreign investors. Without security of assets, no foreign investors would undertake FDI. Closely related to the point just noted is protection of intellectual property rights, as intellectual property is a source of competitive edge for most foreign direct investors. These points may be summarized as the capability of providing credible commitment on the part of host government, or governance for short.

Another interesting observation on a number, this time the GDP was made:

Pattern One: GDP went up even as imports contracted.

Pattern Two: GDP went up even as exports also contracted.

There were more goods and services consumed…but we didn’t export any of them?

The authors of the cited study provide the answer in Page 9 –

At any rate, it is quite clear that NIA statistics and even indicators of foreign asset holdings depict not a consumption-driven rise in economic growth after the Asian Financial Crisis but an import-substitution driven one. Can expenditure switching or import substitution explain the rise in Philippine economic growth after the Asian Financial Crisis? If the national income accounts are reliable, this would be a tautological question since the numbers clearly say that such was indeed the case.

    They also suggest that:

6 – Consumption growth is probably overestimated

7 – Agriculture may not be as robust

8 – On the contrary, Industry is weakening

9 – There are many problems in the measurement of service sector growth

The authors stated that consumption might be overestimated. They might as well have included:

    - imports are underestimated and,

    - exports are understimated.

These underestimations, in case people forget, is the lifeblood of customs.

In general, it would be safe to say that all the goods coming in and out of the Philippines are under–declared. These “pilferages” will add up. While the customs duties for such goods are not declared, their entry into the economy will have an impact and will be reflected as an increase in consumption as people pay for goods that they consume – but these goods were not captured at the point of entry or exit into the Philippines.

A STRONG ECONOMY BUILT ON WHAT?

It is an economy built on the paradigm of import-substitution, pretty much a protectionist paradigm – which of course is institutionalized in the Constitutional provisions on national patrimony. An economy built on the whims of the local economic elite, without any worries about foreign competition. The local economy is has a captive market that the local economic elite can toy with, with impunity.

Then, a ball was thrown from left field:

    Benigno, Bencard,UPn, and BongV

Nibbling at the fringes of a well thought out and sybstabtiated essay bt Dean de la Paz, Why don’t you attack his numbers if you disagree with his analysis? Economics is too complicated for you?

The gist of it is that the GMAs numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt. And I agree For instance, in education – when the Education secretary proclaimed that there was a lack of classrooms – GMA instructed her to pack more children in a classroom – WTF. She solved the classroom issue, BUT in a perverted way. GMA claimed there was economic growth – I agree. NOW, whether this growth was equitably distributed is another matter, given the Gini coefficient. There is nothing new to what the author is saying that I am not aware of. And the conclusion he derives from the data are no different from the conclusions I will make based on the data.

So anong problema mo ngayon MCB?

And it does not help that Philippine society has citizens that behave like feudal subjects, half-brutes even – prompting Jose Rizal to reiterate the adage – like people, like government. James Fallows completes the circle of ground hog day:

Most of the things that now seem wrong with the economy–grotesque extremes of wealth and poverty, land-ownership disputes, monopolistic industries in cozy, corrupt cahoots with the government–have been wrong for decades.

It even gets glaring when one attempts to elevate the discussion to a rational and systematic discussion that the vacuous play possum and play the victim card to the hilt and would rather talk about how victimised they are instead of discussing solutions objectively measurable time-bound measurable solutions. The victim chatter is pathetic, it sickening, and retarded. What’s worse – are its enablers!

So, the long and short of it. The Philippine state of affairs (not just the SONA speech,) is all good – Situation Normal All Effed Up – SNAFU.

If that’s the case… not bad… You might probably want to try posting at filipino voices dot com where you can post your resume, your advocacy and write something about loving and caring for the helpless. There you can also post the things that you’ve done for your fellowmen, the books that you’ve written and the successes of your engagements.

    Janice,

In the Philippines, Filipinos are TOO ENGROSSED WITH POLITICS (the art of maneuvering through the complex web of power-relationships in order to gain power) as opposed to POLICIES (doing what needs to be done in order to meet society’s real needs).

Sa mga First World countries at pati na rin sa mga Third World Countries na mabilis umangat patungong first world, ang mga tao ay tumitingin sa POLICIES.

Sa Pilipinas, puro POLITICS. And for a stupid and brain-dead people like majority of Filipinos – including the supposedly educated Filipinos – Politics means gaining POPULARITY.

Kaya palpak ang Pilipinas. People are more engrossed with FORM over substance.

    Hi Janice

Sabi nga nila, “To each his own”. At the end of the day, it’s your life we are talking about here. Who are we to tell you what to do? But you are the one who opened up the floodgates to analysing your current status so we are merely giving you our two cents worth.

From the sound of it, your advocacies make Mother Teresa’s own work look like peanuts :) . I have a feeling though your exposure to the needy is part of your job. If you volunteer to help them, then good on you.

You don’t have to justify going to parties. Everyone goes to parties and celebrations. What we are talking about here is the excessive partying. People always think they deserve to have one kahit na hirap. Pero, do they think about their future? Not much. Filipinos don’t even want to discuss the platform of the presidential candidates. They couldn’t be bothered because they would rather party.

    Hi Janice

You remind me of Janice de Belen. Sumikat yun sa drama show nya dati :)

Anyway- excuses, excuses, excuses. What you just wrote are just lot of excuses for why some people need to have excessive parties and why the Philippines is still the way it is. Sabi nga ni Benign0, loser mentality lang yan. People need to move on from whatever bad experience they had in the past.

The popular social networking site facebook has a newsfeed that was design in such a way that all the old wall updates will go down the page because people are not interested in what you did yesterday. People are more interested in what you are doing in now. What are the Filipinos doing differently now to elevate themselves from misery? Wala masyado, partying pa rin.

    I totally agree with you.

I believe that the RIGHT TO PARTY is Self Evident, protected by our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Geneva Convention, and the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

DO NOT let them trample on our RIGHTS. Do we not have free will? Who are these people to tell us how to spend our time and money. I do not recall giving up these RIGHTS.

Give me PARTY or Give me DEATH!

See you at Starbucks. Let’s have a party there NOW! :)

What’s wrong about partying? If you worked hard for the past week, you deserve some slack for partying and turning the booze up. Much deserved hangovers belong to people who work their butts off.

However those who are tamad do not deserve a bit of alcohol or party music.

    Dear Blogger:

Salamat.

There is no alternative to hard work. Kahit sino ka, kahit saan ka nanggaling, at kahit ano man ang katayuan mo sa buhay, THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE TO HARD WORK TO MAKE IT IN LIFE. Kahit na sabihin mo pa na yung mga successful na tao ay suwerte, you have to remember that LUCK IS A COMBINATION OF PREPARATION AND THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY. The most successful entertainers, athletes, business people, and leaders out there are passionate about working and their work. Kasi alam nila na it takes thousands (yes! 10,000 hours pa nga, sabi ni Malcolm Gladwell sa libro nya na “Outliers”) of preparation to be truly good and successful in any endeavor.

We Filipinos have had so many opportunities to do things right, but we didn’t match them with the right preparation (read: hard work, training), so paano tayo uunlad niyan? Kesa sa sayangin mo ang oras mo sa panonood ng gossip programs, wowowee/eat bulaga, PBB at mga walang ka-kwenta kwentang telenobelas, read a book (you will improve your vocabulary and you will learn a lot!); get trained (i taught myself web design), mag-practice sa pagsusulat (in this day and age, this is a fantastic sideline from home, and it can help you pay the rent and bills), get a hobby that you can turn into a money-making venture eventually.

At the very minimum, at least if you have to go to a party, then have a PURPOSE (Example: networking) at hindi lang mag-lasing hanggang umaga. If you have to party, then at least that you have earned the right to relax and booze a little. Everything in moderation, sabi nga.

This article reminds me of how most of my peers behave with regards to our academics.

I am currently a college student and nearly graduating. In the three years that I have spent with my batch, I just have to say, most of what this article speaks of, my peers and myself are guilty of.

Long story short, I was once a member of the organization of our course and I resigned because they were promoting the values (vices) stated above. The quality of the projects of my sector in the organization was always questionable at best. The people were always uninspired with regards to the projects they were assigned, hence lazy-arsed work ethics and even more so, quality-compromised output. They always settled for “at least may nagawa” rather than aim for “we can do our best.” And that really irritated me to a fault. Another unsettling aspect of their behavior is that when it comes to our organizations real projects, you couldn’t feel the passion in their work but, lo and behold, whenever it was about org parties, did they give it all they had.

Every time something can be celebrated, they make an excuse out of it to get drunk and party.

We are supposed to be the hope of our nation and here we lie, drunk, lazy and uninspired to do any real work.

    How depressing.

    Good article!

All of the comments here are true but it would have been nice to include some suggestions as to how we can shift from “party mode” to “productive”or “progessive mode” as a nation.

As a fellow reader here in Antipinoy, my suggestion is to simplify our lifestyles as Filipinos. There’s nothing wrong with parties but I do agree that partying too much is what makes it wrong. Most opf our other fellow Filipinos already succumbed to the mentality that you have to spend in order to become happy. Focusing on needs more than wants is a good start. This moral has been taught as early as we were in grade school but most of us never listened to the simple yet effective idea.
