Dear VP Leni Robredo, Filipinos are not as stupid as you think they are

Possibly out of exasperation over Robredo’s non-stop cross-border tirades against the administration’s war on drugs, President Rodrigo Duterte offered Vice-President Leni Robredo the opportunity to lead the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign.

Robredo declined. If the drug war didn’t fail, she says, then why the need for her appointment?

It wouldn’t have been a problem if Robredo was just a regular taxpayer criticizing the government. But she isn’t. She is the vice-president, who the Consitution designates as the first in the line of succession. It’s her job to take over Duterte’s job should anything happen to him, and that job includes leading the drug war.

Anybody with at least half a brain understands that Duterte was exaggerating when he said during the campaign season that he can end the illegal drug trade in just six months. I myself interpreted it as a promise to take the drug problem more seriously.

And that resonated to me because the Aquino Administration in its entire six years of existence seems to have pretended that there was no drug problem at all.

I hail from a small rural town in Bulacan where most of my neighbors belong to Socioeconomic Classes D and E. While my community had a handful of resident shabu (methampetamine) addicts back during the presidencies of Ramos, Estrada, and Arroyo, they were undoubtedly the exception.

But come 2010, everything changed. Drugs during the Aquino Era were so easy (and relatively cheap) to buy that most of the men in my barangay turned into meth addicts. By 2013, being a drug addict, at least in my village, became the norm.

And because these addicts come from poorer socioeconomic classes, they resorted to crime to fuel their drug habit.

And because I live in an archetypal rural village where everybody is somehow related by blood, that meant the addicts victimized none other than their own relatives.

Another meth head uncle, a cousin of my dad, stole my grandaunt’s water tank and was likely planning to sell the scrap metal to the nearest junk shop. Caught in the act, his defense was he took the tank “for safekeeping.” Only addicts subscribe to that kind of logic.

Another uncle became notorious for his habit of running amok in the middle of the night while high on shabu. I heard his screams and threats because he lives (and runs amok) just a block away from my grandma’s home.

Most of men there are farmers, but a lot of them stopped working because they’ve literally become too high to function. Without means to feed their families, “nakawan ng ulam at sinaing,” despite how absurd it sounds, became commonplace. Yes, people got so broke and so high that they literally even steal what their neighbor would eat for lunch.

Oh, and before I forget. I also have this uncle who got so high, he flashed his private parts to one of my aunts and even showed signs that he intended on raping her.

All of these stories happened during the Aquino Administration, where access to drugs in my own community was so easy that almost everybody turned into a meth zombie.

And when the Probinsiyano from Davao City showed during the 2016 campaign that he was the only candidate who fully recognized the existence of the drug problem and the need to definitively address it, then I wasn’t at all surprised when my neighbors in Bulacan rallied behind him.

No, they didn’t expect him to totally stop drugs, but they expected him to make illegal drug use far less prevalent than it was during the reign of Leni Robredo’s Liberal Party.

The problem with Robredo’s logic, i.e. taking the 6-month deadline literally, is that it assumes that Filipino voters are so stupid that they took this promise as literally as Robredo did.

No, Mrs. Robredo.

Even poor Filipinos love to dream big. But the poor are inherently aware of the reality that they do not always get everything they want. So when Duterte promised to end the Drug Problem in 6 months, what they heard is a promise that there’ll be fewer addicts than there were when Robredo’s party was in power.

And that’s exactly what happened.

In my village today, the running joke is, “Salamat kay Pangulong Duterte, tumaba na ako.” (Thanks to President Duterte, I’ve gotten fat.), which is a euphemism for “I stopped doing drugs.” Shabu suppresses the appetite, that’s why.

Despite the drug war’s imperfections, my village is safer now because of it.

That doesn’t mean that the drug war needs no, as Robredo puts it-“tweaking.” But to simply criticize the drug war without providing a realistic, feasible, and well-defined alternative, is just stupid… and that’s what Robredo’s been doing for the past three years.

Time for Globe and Smart to stop giving Filipinos unlimited Facebook access

It’s time. Many Filipinos and their “thought leaders” have been criticising the role social media giant Facebook had supposedly been playing in skewing political chatter. Many argue that it had become a platform for “disinformation” and “fake news”. More importantly — in particular, to the oligarchs who are losing money in their once-profitable media businesses — Facebook is eroding the erstwhile command over the discourse enjoyed by traditional news media operations.

Not surprisingly, no less than the Inquirer editor himself calls Facebook a “problematic platform” citing how “free FB is the only internet for millions of people” in the Philippines and, as such, affords it disturbingly disproportionate control over voter sentiment.

It is becoming more evident that Facebook poses an existential threat to democracy and the free market in light of the power it wields over how human individuals think and over how they might move collectively. In his open letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Aaron Sorkin, author of The Social Network, points out…

Don’t say Larry Flynt. Not even Larry Flynt would say Larry Flynt. This isn’t the same as pornography, which people don’t rely upon for information. Last year, over 40 percent of Americans said they got news from Facebook. Of course the problem could be solved by those people going to a different news source, or you could decide to make Facebook a reliable source of public information.

Indeed, Americans can’t get off Facebook. Filipinos, on the other hand, won’t. Big difference right there. Access to the Internet may (arguably) be a right. But access to Facebook specifically? That’s like making drinking Coca Cola a human right and expecting water to compete with it as a means of hydration.

It is therefore clear that Philippine telcos like Globe and Smart are part of the problem. By giving unfair advantage to a private enterprise on what, in essence, is a utility service, these businesses are contributing to propagating what is now considered to be a growing threat to democracy itself.

There is nothing inherently wrong with Facebook. What is wrong is the privilege it is given by service providers like Philippine telco giants like Globe and Smart to get into people’s heads.

Conspiracy Theory: Ate LENI as an ALIEN unleashed to destroy Digong and Bongbong

Despite Otso Deretso’s crushing defeat in the recent senatorial polls, Yellowtardism isn’t really dead yet. Leni Robredo (more commonly regarded by the vast majority as the fake VP) is the last remaining thread that keeps the Yellow camp’s hopes alive.

Imagine if Ms. Heartbeat Away assumes the throne as Chief Executive the moment Digong passes away one of these days. With all the gloom-and-doom super-quakes taking place in Mindanao lately, not to mention reckless self-inflicted motorcycle mishaps, it’s not a remote possibility. The country survived a Cory and a PNoy, but will it survive a Leni? One thing’s pretty certain: she will likely easily dethrone PNoy from the pedestal of “pinaka-nakakahiyang (most embarrassing) Head of State in Philippine history.”

For now, Ms. Heartbeat Away is having the time of her life in her role as the Opposition-anointed crusader in saving the country from “dictators.” Yellow-aligned media outlets are waiting like hungry leopards ready to pounce every time ate Leni has a pronouncement. Having overcome the first hurdle of Bongbong’s VP electoral protest, things could further turn in her favor to unsuspecting Filipinos’ surprise.

Getting paid a hefty sum by taxpayers simply to criticize from a lofty ivory tower just about anything the current administration is doing isn’t such a bad position to be in. The stinking problem though is that the message delivery is such an incompetent confounding mess. Why can’t she communicate with clarity?

Where does she get those “facts” about the scale of killings in the drug war? What’s the point of antagonizing China when we can’t even defend ourselves militarily? Some are wondering where she gets all the garbage she sends out to entire world, and why top broadcast networks still keep peddling her every word for public consumption, despite the complete farce that she represents.

Why does the “VP” speak the way she does? One conspiracy theory is that Ate Leni is actually an ALIEN whose gastrointestinal tract works in the reverse direction. This can likely explain where all the illogically confusing crap and obscure statements spewing out that big hole on her head is coming from. Those who dine with her in secret upper-echelon LP-exclusive chambers can possibly attest to the validity of what the common Yellowtard will dismiss to be a preposterous speculation.

Leni could be the centerpiece of a well-orchestrated grand conspiracy to bring down Digong and Bongbong. And for what purpose? To keep Pinoys poor, incompetently managed and anti-intellectual simply because these aliens need a constant supply of brown people who will be willing slaves streaming out of this tropical paradise for first-world nations to focus on alien-sponsored endeavors that matter more than cleaning up homes, dishes and elderly folk’s assholes.

We should begin to ask the right questions to dig deeper into the conspiracy’s rabbit hole:

1. Did the alien who took on Leni’s resemblance actually have Jesse (and the real Leni) killed?

2. How did a complete nobody just a few years back with no real credentials or accomplishments other than something like “her dog died” suddenly get to be the second most powerful official of the land?

3. And finally, why do so many pictures show Leni awkwardly looking like an alien straight out of a freak-show Hollywood thriller?

It would be interesting to see how the story plays out. Besides, when life’s just a joke or entertaining telenovela, Filipinos won’t really mind getting a taste of their own Charot medicine.

Sometimes, more often, we can come to the aid of the person who is spiritually poor or crippled. Perhaps it is that person who is always in a foul mood, or that other who once spread a rumor about me. “Blessed will you be because of their inability to repay you.” Self-interest vs. Resurrection: Fr. Joe always used to say this about his priesthood: “The pay is lousy, but the retirement benefits are out of this world.” Self-interest is about getting the positive payback here and now. True love and charity do not keep a score card to make sure that “it’s worth it.” No, we are living for eternity. Let’s ask the Lord to give us a better sense of the big picture, to see that those unrequited good deeds are the best ones. So, you parents of the world, take heart! Your sacrifices will indeed find their reward, “in the resurrection of the righteous.” Conversation with Christ: Dear Lord, how often I am thinking, “What’s in it for me?” Help me to reach out to others beyond the limits of my group. Disaster struck Mindanao because of Duterte supporters according to @YolyOng!

It’s not enough that Yoly Ong condemned the victims of the recent earthquake that hit Mindanao, she’s now promoting discrimination in her latest tweet…

This is exactly what happened during the relief efforts for the super typhoon Yolanda. Instead of giving the relief goods indiscriminately, the yellows in charge only wanted to help yellow voters.

Funny enough, Ong defers to “karma” for her hoped-for vindication.

Karma, she says? The Liberal Party has been experiencing karma since 2016: Mar Roxas lost his presidential bid, Leni Robredo’s win is being questioned, Ferdinand Marcos’s burial went ahead, Leila De Lima got locked up, Lourdes Sereno was removed from the Supreme Court, all Liberal Party bets for the senate lost in 2019 elections, and many more.

So Ong still thinks the earthquake was due to karma?! She also thinks the victims were cursed…damn! She can’t put a lid on it. No wonder Leni is popular with them. They are all the same. They are callous and insensitive! The voters should remember this in the next election.

Recall earlier Ong’s now-infamous non-apology…

Clearly this doesn’t make any sense. Why would an earthquake or any natural disaster jolt voters? A natural occurrence doesn’t happen based on one’s voting preference.

The palusot is still palpak! Some people prefer to dig themselves deeper into a hole rather than apologise.
