Do You Find Pinoy Associations BORING and A PAIN?

It occurred to me that I consistently decline joining Pinoy orgs here – and abroad. I have a broad range of reasons for doing so. I’ve always had an independent streak. And within the context of a tsismoso, pakialamero, usyosero, inggitero (as in get a life!) culture – you might as well say am not keen on being around the plain jane garden variety pinoys. And it’s not for lack of trying. I try to be as cordial and civil as can be – to the point of pandering even.

But as the laws of probability will have it – there will always be a fliptard somewhere. The probability, incidence, and distribution of proud fliptards increases directly – as the number of pinoys increase. And when you get into Filipino associations the incidence of fliptards rises exponentially. Laughing

AVOID PINOY PARTIES AND ASSOCIATIONS LIKE THE PLAGUE - YOU WILL BE BORED TO DEATH WITH SPEECHES.

By the time the gathering is in full swing – I will have learned that:

MOST Pinoy organizations have NO sense of purpose

I know the organization has a name but does its name match its purpose and its actions? It could be a professional association, a regional association, a business association, a social club. Don’t be fooled by the names – these are just incidental. You might as well have signed up for the girl scouts or the boy scouts – they have more fun activities. Cool

There’s no strategic plan; There’s no calendar of events; There’s no sense of direction – very like THE Philippines – adrift nowhere.

Clearly we are on VERY different pages

I prefer the lean and mean approach – whether its life, work, or what not. You know, adopt the Pareto principle, focus on those with the most wins – the things that matter. Most flip scenes I have scoped are chop suey approach. They want to be everything to the world. This ends up in an organizations being pulled everywhere except the desired destination.

Also most flips I have encountered in these Pinoy gatherings talk mainly showbiz. Thus when there’s someone who has a more diverse range of interests – music, arts, economy, history, politics, business, science, and sex – I stick around, otherwise, I sneak out and head home or the nearest watering hole and have a party for two. Wink

Different Choice of Activities

- It’s all socials – aka.. the “junk food”.

- They like line dancing – I DON’T – I prefer FREE STYLE.

- Or, if it’s not line dancing – then there’s too much ballroom dancing – makes me smell like mothballs. I tend to mix it up… rock and roll, reggae, techno, hip hop.

- Then there’s the Karaoke intermissions and my ears are ringing from all the offtune rendering of MY WAY.

- Most like to sit and watch – I’d rather have carpet burns on my knees :) – Two’s company – Three is a crowd

Different Choice of Music

- I can’t stand OPM – i find it too cheesy, tacky, tired, and shallow

- I can’t say this enough – I mix it up… rock and roll, reggae, techno, hip hop, smooth jazz, new age, 80s

Different Generations

Older Pinoys tend to gravitate to associations, and they stick like rice.

I am from a self-reliant survivalist generation – I don’t take orders from anyone who does not pay my bills :) - Thus in an association – older generations of pinoys expect that when they order – I will jump.. obviously – I DON’T.

After a long day at work – I like to rest and recharge and enjoy my “me” time.

Being around fliptards isn’t exactly my idea of rest and relaxation. Nor do I intend to create a situation where I increase the probability of meeting more fliptards and increase my amusement at their expense- if it were so, I wouldn’t have left da Pinas.

No love lost for Fliptard “heritage” or the “Proud Pinoy” way.

Then there’s the party where these tards wear the shirts with the Philippine map and the latest “proud pinoy” design. He might as well be wearing a t-shirt for the Special Olympics.

But once in awhile I do get the chance to meet a few Pinoys who are on the same page as I am – and we don’t have to be members of any association to have fun and achieve stuff – it’s light and fun. – and most of all – NO FLIPTARDS.. and NO LONG-WINDED SPEECHES. Cool

Is it true that in foreign locations, there’s a group for every region, say an Ilocano Association, a Cebuano Association, etc., even if the membership would consist of only a dozen each group? Most likely, they won’t band together to form a big Pinoy Association? Heck, if one member doesn’t like the way things are going, he/she would split and create a SECOND regional group?

    @maritza

In china they have people referred to as members of the ‘fifty cent club’ or wumaodangs, who are paid very small amounts by the government to post pro government statements/responses on blog sites. Trolls is another related term

The copy cat culture here and the chinese connection is starting to create a suspiciously similar pattern on some sites – i will call them caradangs.

They are mostly readily identifiable since they dont tend to express opinion or debate but simply make slogan type statements repeatedly, and i suspect this will increase as the government struggles with one of their greatest fears – people having ready access to information and open discussion, and as such the web/blogs remain uncontrolled media and technology they dont understand.

The caradangs will make no difference to the demise of video gameboynoy

    Power to the people

    @bongv
50 year anniversary of satirical magazine Private Eye.
as the founder said ‘ dont discriminate – treat all equally badly’

Malacanan said it is up to arroyo if she stays in exile when she travels abroad at the end of this month.
How laid back, how revealing, and how accomodating all of a sudden – no drive for justice simply a desire to get the arroyos out of the way. Hence the increasing pressure of government statements , including p-noy himself ‘charges in november’, ‘jail by christmas’
‘Ombudsman review within 7 days re pnp helicopter scam’.
Also revealing is the fact that gma has been given permission to travel ( along with the FG) to germany, switzerland ( pass go and collect 200million dollars) and US , complete with diplomatic passports – which certainly FG should not have – just as charges are supposedly going to be brought, and if filed, they will be when she is abroad, just to add to the pressure to remain in exile.
    Smell a rat?
So it begs the question – why?
I wish i knew, but i have a theory, and at the heart of it is the shadowy machiavellian cojuangco who is a supreme opportunist and driven by power and greed to such an extent that he would sell his grandmother to necrophiliacs if it was beneficial – remember what happened to ninoy on the tarmac, and that was family!
The goal was always to have economic control of pampanga and that would be impossible with the arroyos around.
    Cojuangco has bought clark airport.
P-noy wants clark to be the new hub for philippines!
    Cojuangco has bought airline
P-noy is not having open skies policy!
Cojuangco has bought tourist resort in subic
p-noy is luring korean and chinese investment to tarlac and subic
cojuangco is buying plantations – for residential and industrial development
no chance of losing hacienda luisita or carp implementation
p-noy is supporting fast rail link to clark , and next ? extension to subic and tarlac
pampanga is the economic jewel in the crown and clark is critical to a new cojuangco kingdom.
    monopoly businesses with no competition.
p-noy was the simple hinest front man and the next 5 years will cement a dynasty which will go unchallenged.
cojuangco/aquino governors in tarlac and ? pampanga. game, set and match.

Glad to know that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Thanks!

I’d like to share my Pinoy org story, but this was during my university years in a University in Boston. I sought out the Pinoy org there, a guy who is actually born in the Philippines and knew about the culture a bit as a kid but had forgotten it as I grew older. Its made up of young people like me who knew less about the country than I did and more on what they saw in periodicals or what their mothers/fathers taught them what pinoy culture is like. So pretty much Fil-Ams are misunderstood or only understood about the country on the surface. Ultimately I left since I thought it would help me understand more about the country, but that wouldn’t happen until I came back to the Philippines in 2005 where I was once again, re-educated about the realities of the country.

LIVE abroad for long uninterrupted period and immerse in the ways of the the adopted land. The objective is not to turn out a clone but to profit the fresh start the new environment affords.

Mingling with 1st generation filipinos abroad simply does not cut, it only results in morphing. It sounds harsh but ugly truth it is.

I read the entire article and I totally agree with you. I’m just glad that there are some Filipinos who’re not like the mindless sheep you see around these parts nowadays. I do find associations and clubs, boring and a pain. My parents received invitations to join some some of those groups, but they declined. It ain’t their cup of tea. Wala naman din mangyayari sayo. :D
