Matthew McConaughey has a message for Hollywood: Accept the fact that Donald Trump is the President of the United States. And find a way to work with him.
McConaughey recently spoke to ChannelFi about his new big-screen crime drama Gold, in which he plays a prospector (it’s “an underdog story”), and how he relates to Rust in True Detective (philosophically they’re on the same page, but he’s a believer in God while Rustin Cohle is not). Not surprisingly, the conversation also turned to Trump, as the interviewer noted that “every single American actor or arty type who come to London dumps on Trump,” and asked the Oscar-winning actor if it’s time for Hollywood and the cultural elite of America to “give the guy a break.” Responded McConaughey, “Well, they don’t have much of a choice.”
“He’s our president,” he continued. “And it’s very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we’ve ever had. At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace, shake hands with this fact, and be constructive with him over the next four years. So, even those who most strongly may disagree with his principles or things he’s said and done — which is another thing, we’ll see what he does compared to what he had said — no matter how much you even disagreed along the way, it’s time to think about how constructive can you be. Because he’s our president for the next four years. At least.”
Hollywood has been especially outspoken since President Trump took office on Jan. 20. Scarlett Johannson, America Ferrera, and Chelsea Handler are among the many who participated in the Women’s March the following day, which had worldwide reach, and others criticized last Friday’s executive orderwhich banned immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries and refugees from around the world.
McConaughey’s interview aired Sunday morning in Britain, days after the president signed the executive order; it’s unclear when the interview was first recorded.
