I turned on the TV and let my kids watch the news with me. After a while, they exclaimed that “the people on TV makes the black man sound so bad. Are they racists, Daddy?”
They were actually listening to news reports about the former top man of Makati who is now the Vice President of the Philippines, and like always, every time the election draws near, there would always be negative news about the potential candidates for Presidency. It never fails.
I said ” No. You only say racist if it involves another race. In this case, the man is just naturally darker in complexion. Most Filipinos are either brown or darker.”
I’ve read from the Philippine Daily Inquirer that “the dumbest mistake of Jejomar Binay was to double-cross his vice mayor and bagman. The second big mistake was to allow himself and his family to become too greedy. And the third was to aspire to be president of this country.”
Most of us have probably heard from the news that the family is in FULL scrutiny right now for the alleged corruption the Binays are involved in especially that the former Vice Mayor of Makati has revealed facts that could not be explained by any of the members of the family that dominated Makati city.
We’ve heard about “word-class” buildings cionstructed under their administration that are not really high standard based on the findings of experts, a million peso house with even an elevator that would have been impossible to built from a councilor’s salary, a condominium unit WINNING from the same developer contracted to build one of their Makati buildings, and a lot more issues that keep coming to haunt them now that the run for presidency is nearing.

Some would say that this is a highly orchestrated shame campaign designed to ruin the family’s reputation especially that Binay is expected to run for the highest government position of the country. But the facts are very revealing, and until the Binays could submit a more credible explanation to ANSWER all accusations, the people will remain doubtful of their characters.
Would it affect the older Binay’s chances for the presidency. Yes! it probably will. Will the shame campaign extend to his children? Yes! it probably will. But knowing how people react and become emotionally involved, some may side with the underdog, while some may abstain. Some would prefer to remain mutual if they are friends with both parties, and only a few may become persistent in expressing their feelings and translate them into concrete acts.
Running for a government position, especially the highest position, was never an easy task. Even the popularity of Noynoy Aquino before did not help him today to prevent detractors from cursing him now. Did anybody became greedy for their own good. We know that everyone of them may be pocketing some of the taxpayers MONEYeither by using them for their own personal consumption, or abusing them to benefit only a few, including their friends, families and relatives. We also know that there are no permanent friends and enemies in politics so everyone should be wary of his or her every move. You simply cannot trust anybody especially when you’re corrupt.
The NEXT thing the Senate and the Ombudsman should do is to let VP Binay explain where he got his wealth. Failure to show evidence means all his assets and properties are all “Unexplained Wealth” which are subject for forfeiture by the government.
What is evident is that many of our government officials are not really ready and prepared to tell the world the entirety of their personalities. All of them obviously have something to hide.
For many, in this particular case, the skin color of the Binay family may actually reflect their true intentions towards the country – dark and shady.
I remembered a time when my photographer colleagues asked the bodyguards if it was alright to use camera flash to take PHOTOS of the Vice President (merely because they don’t allow it for the Presidency). They were worried Binay may not be captured good without a flash because of his dark complexion.
The future may not be so bright for them if these CONTINUE to spread. I am not a judge of a person based from their skin color but when you can’t seem to directly explain, you are meant to be buried in shame.
