Wouldn’t you know it, President Benigno Aquino III is also a ‘tuta ng kano’ or an American lapdog.
It’s the typical leftist pinoy rhetoric that we are certain will be used over and over again, long after all the leaders and ideologues of the Philippine communist revolution have all died.
Thing is, I would bet that if a leftist politician ever becomes a Philippine president, his fellow leftists will probably be burning effigies and chanting “tuta ng kano” on Mendiola or wherever it is they hold their rallies these days.
But don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against leftists or their ideology.
It’s just that as far as my understanding of geo-politics is concerned, I don’t think a country like the Philippines has much choice in the matter of whether or not to be subservient to the interests of other more powerful and richer countries.
In the scheme of things in this world, power and money are what establish, define, and maintain relationships between individuals, organizations, and countries.
And as far as the US helping us out with our problems with China, people shouldn’t hold their breath for America to step in and stop China from coming into our territory.
Not unless, of course, it serves any immediate US interests and my thinking is that there is none that would merit it.
Notwithstanding the prestige that President Barak Obama’s two day visit to the Philippines has given to the Aquino Administration, his brief stay in the country doesn’t signify much even if we were to account for the military deal that was signed.
President Obama said, “”Our goal is not to counter China. Our goal is not to contain China. Our goal is to make sure international rules and norms are respected and that includes in the area of international disputes.”
What does that mean? Well, put in a more colloquial and down-to-earth way, “You’re on your own with China, Juan — that’s what INDEPENDENCE IS ABOUT. We’re just making sure of protecting the flow of goods from Asia to America.”
